Default didn't automatic update, now can't

I have auto update selected on Win XP Pro. The notice
appeared yesterday that new updates were downloaded and
ready to install. I forgot about it and shut the system
down. Now I'd like to install them, but don't know how to
activate whatever was downloaded. I tried manually
running Windows Update, but encountered an error on the
download page when it started scanning my system. This
happened before too, but the auto update has always
worked fine. How can I activate the download?
Thank you.

System Properties Automatic Updates. Is the Declined Updates button
active? If yes, clicking this and using the resulting screens may save you
some time instead of having to download them again.
