Default Twist on "Tools | Folder Options" & Classic Style [Attn: Ramesh and Rogers (et, al)]

I apologize - the first time I sent this without a "Subject"
and I have no idea where it went (the great "bit bucket" in
the sky I hope). This time I have included a topic as well as
some further comments (which I have underlined).

Warning: I am cross posting to 2 Windows XP groups in which
I believe I am most likely to find someone knowledgeable
enough to be able to have an idea how to answer my question.

Brief background:
For a number of reasons - mostly because I wasn't smart enough
to plan as far ahead as Bill Gates and make my "boot drive"
bigger that 5 GBytes and when it came time to install XP-SP2
there wasn't sufficient room - I'm finishing a full
re-installation of XP (on a 30 GByte partition).

An oddity appeared after I installed SP2. And I haven't been
able to find any solution. I prefer the "old Classic"
appearance - call me odd but it just seems a bit cleaner to
me and I don't need all the "extra stuff" that's posted on
the left. And that of course is the problem. Every time I open
a new "window" there is a "panel" on the left with either the
"Search Assistant" or the "Summary Statistics" (System Tasks;
Other Places; and Details). Okay, before you ask, "Yes, I did
use the "Tools | Folders Options" but it didn't really make
any significant different. It only seemed to work for the "My
Computer" and nothing else. When I double click on a drive on
"My Computer" I get the dual pane with the "Search Assistant"
in the left pane - no matter what I do. If I click the "Folder
Button" I get the "Folder" pane on the left but in both cases
I get "To start your search, follow the instructions in the
left pane." If I go to the "Address Bar" at the top I can then
scroll up or down to the "root" of the directory where I was
when I started and *then* the files will be shown in the right
hand screen and not before and the left hand pane is removed.
The same thing happens when I double click on any folder.

Talk about frustrating and hard to get any kind of work done.
It's not just twice as hard to work it's three or four times as
hard. To get anywhere I need to go I have to "Explore" find
the place I need, go "up" one level and then do an "Explore"
on that directory. Then I have to click the "Folder" button
and then scroll to the directory where I want to work. This
may be fine for a single task but for multiple tasks it
becomes a nightmare. It isn't much fun if you have to open
multiple windows. It also makes it hard to remember exactly
where or what step in a process you had reached(when you are
constantly trying to figure out where you are).

I haven't been able to find anywhere, other than those already
mentioned, where I can turn this off. It seems as if somehow
it got stuck with "Search" mode on. It wasn't on before (and
I don't remember turning it off while I was running SP1). I
installed SP2 and the release notes don't say anything about
that - or, if they do maybe I missed it because I haven't a
clue about what it's called.

So, anyone in either of these groups, have a helping hand for
someone who is looking for a way to turn off the left hand
panel so that when he clicks on a folder all he sees is the
files that are in it?

Many thanks.

David

Hi David,

This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries =
via File Types dialog, to add a "Command Prompt here" or "Print =
Directory" feature for folders. (example)

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=3D321379
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=3D321186

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix this problem:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

(Courtesy of David Candy)

To fix this manually via registry:

If this problem is seen for Drives:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

If this problem is seen for folders:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

My XP boot partition is 5Gb. But paging file, my "user" folders and browser
caches are on different partitions, so it's plenty of room, 1Gb free.

Ramesh,

*IF* it weren't politically incorrect, *AND* *IF* you wouldn't
take it wrong and would take it as it was intended, I'd give you
one *big kiss.* I guess a virtual pickup truck of your favorite
snack treat will have to do instead - is that "HoHo's" or "Ding-
Dongs" that you'll be want'in?

Many, many, many thanks, it's working as (I) expected it to.

(While I hope I'll never see it again, nor the other described
behavior, I'm going to file this away in my "Tips Never To Be
Forgotten" folder.)

"cpemma"

I did many of those things too but sadly, my kids got on and set
up their "profiles" before I could get it all set up the way it should
have been done so a lot of the user files got stuck on "C" even
though I moved as much as I could just before I tried the update.

I did have the paging files and as many of the caching files as I
could wrangle on other partitions. (They ask me for feed back
and I was free with me "why don't you give us a chance to tell
the update program where place on disk to use for "scratch
space." Like I believe they'll listen to me.)

Maybe when I run out of space *NEXT* time. Ha!
