Default Windows Update

How can I tell if I have all of the updates updated
correctly? When I go to All Programs and then to
Installation History (for Windows Updates) the update
numbers sometimes do not match up like they should. I
know I sound dumb, but I do have a learning disability
and I just like to make sure I have myself protected by
making sure all of the updates that need to be on my
computer are acutally there. I run the scan for updates
and most of the time nothing shows up for me to download
(I am usually prompted to do so when needed), as far as a
critical update goes, but by keeping that in mind, am I
as protected as I think I am while on line?
