Those are the core system files necessary to run Windows XP.=20
Leave them alone unless you wish to reformat and reinstall XP from scratch. --=20 Nicholas -------------------------------------------------------------------------= -------------------------- "bored" wrote in message: =20 ... | Hello, | I have been reading a bit and I came across these files -- | krnl386.exe and kernel32.dll in my WINDOWS\system32 directory. Can you = please | tell me what they do. *Are they the windows kernel ( combined = together)* | ?.I'm just curious. krnl386.exe ?-- just curious
Hi, in Windows XP the main kernel is hosted in ntoskrnl.exe, but it also has
other components that are spread acroos files. The most important of these are ntkrnlpa.exe, hal.dll, win32ksys and ntdll.dll. krnl386.exe is not actually the kernel, but it is a component that allows older 16-bit programs to access kernel services. kernel32.dll is for 32-bit apps to access kernel functions.
