Why not? I'd like to know. I still have my legal installation media of
Office 95, and it did all I ever needed.

I'd be interested in Office 97 - does everything I want without bloat and
that silly ribbon.

Ran OK on Win 7 but wouldn't allow installation of SR2 because of a font
issue.

You can always use Virtualbox, VMWare Player or Hyper-V!

Check out http://www.freeoffice.com/ which is an MS Office compatible
replacement. The above link is a lite free version, but they also
have a commercial version with more capability. I've started with the
free version and moved up to the pay version ($99) several years ago.
It's well worth the money IMO.

For Hyper-V, you need hardware support (SLAT a.k.a EPT).

I went to all the trouble of acquiring hardware with the
appropriate tick boxes, only to learn more about Hyper-V
and decide it just wasn't something a home user should
be turning on. One of the other hosting softwares
would be less intrusive and "more portable". With only
one machine here having EPT (extended page tables), I
can't even run a Hyper-V machine on one of the other
computers in the house, if my Hyper-V capable machine
breaks down on me.

VirtualBox runs on just about any machine here with
enough cores to do a good job of running virtual machines.
I've even run VirtualBox on my single-core laptop, and
while it works, it isn't a speed demon. The only negative
comment I have about VirtualBox, is it seems to be
tweaked on a per-OS-version basis - it doesn't run
Win2K properly, for example. A Win2K VM sitting idle
in its desktop, causes a single CPU core on the host to run
at 100% CPU. Other hosts don't do that.
