Default Help! Folder View Settings Problem!

Got a new PC. Noticed it has service pack 3, which is new for me.
Whether that is the culprit in some way, I don't know!

Anyway, I'm well used to changing folder view settings, applying to
all folders, etc. It's always worked for me. However, this PC just
won't save them beyond a few hours, occasionally a day (varies).

I've been reading and reading on the web, and people mention a limit
(400?) of views XP can remember, so that's another reason why I've
never had this before (old PC didn't have may files and folders).

Whatever..... I've spent a week trying to find a fix. Lots of people
mention changing registry settings, re BagMru keys etc. I am
comfortable with regedit, so have tried them, but it STILL comes back.

I've tried all the suggestions in forums, from "Kelly's Corner" to you
name it, but nothing fixes it permanently.

Can anyone please suggest what I might try next?

Thank you.
Max.

Back up your registry, then start regedit, expand and highlight the following keys look in the right
window for "NoSaveSettings". If you find it, delete it or set it to zero. You may have to restart
the computer for the change to take effect.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\Explorer
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer

Default Help! Folder View Settings Problem!

Thanks for all the suggestions folks, but enough was enough. I cannot
believe how much time I've wasted over this issue, which might seem
trivial to some, but became increasingly annoying to me.

So guess what I did?

Wiped EVERYTHING off my PC, reinstalled XP with Service Pack 2 (only),
and guess what? As right as rain?

Which proves - as I suspected - that there is something in Windows
Service Pack 3 which has messed up things in this area. The SP3
documentation doesn't suggest it was affected, but WRONG!

I'm not going to get into a debate with Microsoft about this. If they
want to come over to the UK and visit my machine, I will prove it to
them! I'll even buy cakes for tea!

I find it quite horrifying that I've tried over 70 registry fixes
(going by what others have documented on the web), some of them by
Microsoft employees(!), yet NONE of them fixed it. I'm left with the
impression that they've made the registry so complex now that even
THEY don't know all the ramifications of changes! I wonder if they
realise what affects what! I know that's an alarming claim, but don't
take my word for it. LOTS of people in Windows land can tell you
they've had supposed "fixes" that do nothing!

Over and out. Phew!

That does not prove the Service Pack 3 messed up something with your
optical drive. You are comparing a fresh install of only Windows XP
SP-2 against a polluted setup of Windows XP SP-3. Until you install
SP-3, you won't know that it screws up your optical drive.

Something you never mentioned is if ever you logoff after making changes
so the pending changes get rolled into your permanent profile. I'm sure
you have before seen the message on logoff or shutdown that says Windows
is saving your profile. If you make changes but your computer crashes
then changes to your profile do not get saved. Since the problem
reappears after several hours or several days, I have to wonder just how
your Windows sessions is getting exited.

Make the change. Check the change got effected. Log off and back on.
Then test if the change was sticky.

I'm not going to get into a debate with Microsoft about this.

The name of this newsgroup starts with microsoft. It is not owned by
nor monitored by Microsoft. You aren't at Microsoft when you are here.
You are in a peer community of other Microsoft Windows XP *USERS*.
Also, Microsoft Valued Professionals (MVPs) are not Microsoft employees
or representatives.

Over and out. Phew!

Which probably means you won't see this response because you won't
bother to return here. So, in effect, you felt the need to vent here.
Okie dokie then, bye bye.
