Default winver and release?

Hi All,

Is it just me or ever since I upgrade to 2004, winver.exe
no gives me the release? Just the build?

reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" /v BuildLabEx

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
BuildLabEx REG_SZ 19041.1.amd64fre.vb_release.191206-1406

Seems now that this is the only way to get it:

reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" /v ReleaseID

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
ReleaseID REG_SZ 2004

I use to be able to just ask the user to run winver to
find out what was going on.

You guys know an easier way to get it?

Perplexed,
-T

Hi T,

Maybe I don't understand the question, so others can pick up if I don't,
where this is what I get from winver on two different machines:

This machine says it's not yet ready for Win10 Pro v2004:
o Win+R winver
REPORTS: Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.836)

This machine was updated to Win10 Home v2004:
o Win+R winver
REPORTS: Version 2004 (OS Build 19041.264)

Maybe I didn't understand the question though, so others can help.

Hi Arlen,

Now this is embarrassing, it states it very clearly
now that I look at to tell you.

As a senior engineer told me years ago, into
everyone's life a little humility must fall

The easiest way to get the winver is to go to the settings page,

Click System; About and scroll down to near the bottom

to Windows Specification.

It is easier to explain and less scarry for a non technical user.

Why force it? What's it going to give them, what will you be able to do
remotely if it goes wrong?

A lot of times I come across a jammed build update.
Windows Nein (w10) does that "A LOT". Then I can
do a manual upgrade from the web site. And I
can do it all remotely. Done is about 10 times now.
