FIOS or win10 changes.
I finally got FIOS today, and by coincidence, or not, there have been
several windows 10 changes just afterwards. 1) Classic Shell already had one problem and now it has mo Has it really been replaced by Classic Start Has that really been renamed Neo-Classic-UI which was renamed Open Shell? Is Open Shell good? Or should I stick with Classic Shell, which still works most of the time. 2) Can't normalize Solitaire. Only maximized or minimized. Or normal is the same as maximized, but when cursor is at edge of screen, the cursor doesn't change to two-headed. It's too hard to move the mouse around when it's maximized and when it's minimized, I can't see it. :-( 3) I run every program that allows it as maximized. Assuming my screen is 10"H x 20"W, when I alt-tab to another program, instead of opening up full screen, it starts about 5"x10" and within a quarter second or less expands to full screen. But it used to always be full screen. If this is a change in windows, anyone who uses maximized windows should have seen it, or will sooon. Have you? 4) This might be the result of the previous change: When Firefox is restarted and opens 15 windows within 10 seconds, it's like a sound and light show. There are bright flashes of largely white screen in between opening windows. There used to be no white screen. It used to open all the windows "quietly". 5) There may be more but I want to post this. (I realize that FIOS shooudn't have anything to do with 1 and 2, and probalby not 3 or 4, but if it's a windows change, I'd expect some of you to have seen hese things in the last couple days. ) |

5) Until today, I could click on a task in the task list and focus would
switch to that task. Then, next, I could click on the same task and focus would go to whatever task had the focus before. Just now I see that the first half of this works, but the second time I click on it, on a task that has focus, nothing happens. Losing this is really bad. Maybe something changed in Task 7 Tweaker? (But the 7 Tweaker icon is no longer able to be made visible from the taskbar.) 6)Several things had changed in my task bar. The language indicator EN SP, etc disappeared, the touch screen icon appeared. And the distinction between background tasks like AVG, stunnel, the speaker icon has disappeared, worse actually. The little box that displayed the hidden ones is gone, and the only ones showiwing are the speaker and the network access icon. Some time ago they got rid of the Taskbar Properties, which one got to by right-clicking an empty part of the taskbar. I liked that a lot better than putting it all in the Settings program, which takes a long time to load and where I can't find what I want. My Windows update history shows the most recent to be on 10/25. And there are more available to download. I coudl also undo one or both recent KB4.. updates, but I don't know what they did. Did tjhey break these 6 things? 7) The icons on my desktop are gone 90% of the time. I see them at
first for a moment, and then occasionally, but basically theyre' of no use. The desktop is blank When I click on the icon in the quick launch bar for Desktop, nothing happens. 8) I've watched movies on a lot of websites, but the one I watched tonight, when I made it full screen, the taskbar didn't go away like it did before alway,s for months, on this website.) I've rebooted windows and these two are not fixed, probably none of them. That's the "soft" Upgrade that might come in after November Patch Tuesday. It didn't seem to be a big enough download to affect anything, but I suspect it cheated and downloaded what it needed in advance. I doubt anyone has done a comprehensive test of 18363 yet. Not the release version. If might have been on the Slow Ring on Insider at some point. There might not be as many people as yourself, running Classic Shell. That may account for the lack of issues seen elsewhere. When I installed 18363 a couple hours ago, there was no Windows.old, so it wasn't a conventional install. I changed OSes to move on to another project, so didn't bash it at all. Paul |

Jonathan, BTW, this is the only thing I thought might be related to FIOS, on the theory that before, it took so much time to load a window, the next one was ready to go as soon as the first one was done, but with FIOS, the screen loaded so quickly, there was time for the blue desktop to show in between. I had to google it also, It is Verizons stupid abbreviation for Fiber Optics System. Posters who use obscure abbreviations should include the full name at least once. Rene |

I had to google it also, It is Verizons stupid abbreviation for Fiber Optics System. No, it's "Fiber Optics Service." You call it a stupid abbreviation; I don't; I think it's fine, and it's well-known. Posters who use obscure abbreviations should include the full name at least once. "Obscure abbreviation"? It's not at all obscure to me, nor do I think it's obscure to most internet users in the US. I've known it for several years, since it first came out. There are now 6,750,000 FIOS subscribers. I'm not a subscriber to it, since it's not available here, but I've used it many times, when I've visited my son, who has it installed. I wish I could get it. It's much better than my Comcast service--roughly five times as fast. Maybe one of these days, it will come here. -- Ken |

Posters who use obscure abbreviations should include the full name at least once. Agree. I also could have googled it, but using acronyms without explanation is always annoying in all contexts. There very few which never need explaining e.g. DNA, BBC, CNN. "Obscure abbreviation"? It's not at all obscure to me, nor do I think it's obscure to most internet users in the US. ^^^^^^^^^^ There's your problem. This is an international forum don't assume everyone knows what you know. |

For me (NL/EU/AU) 'FIOS' didn't ring a bell (until micky - implicitly - explained what it was in another thread of his). And that's while I've used Fibre/Fiber Optics since several decades and have had many discussions on Fibre/Fiber Internet for years on end. Wikipedia shows that 'FIOS' is indeed a US-thing. 'Fios' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fios And, AFAICT, it's actually 'Fios' (Verizon) or 'FiOS' (Frontier), not 'FIOS'. 'Verizon Fios' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verizon_Fios 'FiOS from Frontier' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FiOS_from_Frontier And indeed, spelling it 'FIOS' - with an 'I', not 'i' - is a rather stupid way to spell (i.e. indeed an "obscure abbreviation") an acronym for 'Fiber Optics Service'. |

Acronyms... (Was: FIOS or win10 changes.)

Let's see: 1) Does Not Apply 2) Big Black C... 3) Could Not Negotiate (sounds like it could be a networking term) How'd I do? "Obscure abbreviation"? I'm in the US and I never knew (until today) what FIOS actually stood for. Next thing, you'll be telling me that Xfinity is actually an acronym for something... -- "They say if you play a Microsoft CD backwards, you hear satanic messages. Thats nothing, cause if you play it forwards, it installs Windows." |

There's your problem. This is an international forum don't assume everyone knows what you know. But you forget the fact that the OP is not the brightest bulb around here. He got a brand new Windows 10 machine and he succeeded to break it!! Now he has lots of problems that he can't solve them. Perhaps he should contact that Rogue Trader by the name of T for Todd & Margo (modern day Bonnie & Clyde) who is good at defrauding old & demented Windows 10 users. People helping him here are also in the same situation - old, demented and counting days of being alive. You must be in your 80s as well? You don't sound smart either by responding to all nutters here. -- With over 1,000,000 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |
