Default Direct cable connection (parallel)

I have tried every possible combination described in MS help, and I cannot
establish a direct cable connection (parallel on LPT1) between my desktop
and laptop. I finally managed to connect between two laptops, but using
exactly the same setup between the laptop and desktop, I would get to the
point where it tried to verify the username and password, and then either
rejected it or timed out. All three computers are Dells, using WinXP Home.
Thanks for any help.
