Old scanner won't work.
A 2004 Canon "Canoscan 9900F."
It has no driver for Win7 & Win8. I have my old XPpro computer gathering dust at home, so I want to put the system HDD from this old machine into this computer and boot up the XP when I want to scan. Seems a pity to throw away a good scanner. I still cannot access the "Boot Menu" of my motherboard Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList...d7_v.2.0_e.pdf |

Transplanting the hard drive will require Windows to install new drivers for pretty much every piece of hardware inside the case. Why not just set the XP machine up in an out-of-the-way corner and boot *that* when you want to scan? -- The buck stops at the desk over there. |

I'll need a new monitor though. |

Retest with the USB cable instead. It has both Firewire and USB on the hardware interface. Based on multiple negative leads so far, I would say "continue to use your WinXP machine to do scans". Even USB passthru doesn't work well with that beast. There is no support for users of 64 bit OSes, for one thing. And the so-called "Vista" driver, turned out to be a driver from the year 2004. You can just move the LCD monitor to the WinXP machine, during your scanning session, then move it back later. While you could use a KVM to share one monitor with two computers, that's an unnecessary expense for just a few scans. But if you plan to scan on a daily basis, a KVM will help avoid wearing out the connector. I share my main LCD monitor between a PC and a Mac. I run the Mac maybe once a year (it has the scanner connect to the Mac SCSI bus), and I just move the monitor over to the Mac while using it. I didn't bother with a KVM. The Mac is old enough now, the CMOS battery died on it. Paul |

If I did set up the XP computer on an home LAN, Could I access the scanner as a shared device on the XP computer? ie similarly to the way I would share a printer attached to the XP computer and access it through the LAN connection? Computer HP Pavilion a1140n about 9 years old running Windows XP SP3 HP Scanjet 3300C. I have used the scanner on the this computer since I bought it in 2005 |

You need to install an HP scanner driver to use this scanner on Windows. If there isn't an HP scanner driver at www.hp.com for your operating system, then unfortunately VueScan won't work with this scanner. I still cannot access the "Boot Menu" of my motherboard Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList...d7_v.2.0_e.pdf I always thought that Windows7 had most generic drivers for devices that were supported in XP and Vista. I had a very old Epson Multi function device and Windows 7 recognized it instantly as soon as I plugged it in a spare USB port. Somebody mentioned VueScan so it is a possibility but you also need to consider the cost of a new scanner as compared to the cost of Vuescan driver. You will find that it is cheaper to buy a new scanner for Windows 7 and Windows 8. You might think why throw away something that still works in XP but pragmatism has to come in your decision making in things like this. -- *Good Guy* Website: http://mytaxsite.co.uk Website: http://html-css.co.uk Email: http://mytaxsite.co.uk/contact-us |

All he has to do is connect it up and use it. You can't get more practical than that. Nothing additional need be purchased. It would be nice to use VirtualBox, WinXP, and USB passthru, or use Vuescan, but the threads I've seen so far suggest that might not work all that well. The VirtualBox passthru didn't seem to work with the 9900f, and Vuescan requires a windows driver for that particular scanner. The existing WinXP box remains the winner, in terms of low cost solutions. It would not exactly be easy to match the specs of the 9900f, because it scans in both visible light and infrared, as part of image cleanup. Something cheesy scanners don't have. So you can't duplicate this scanner for $100. It would be a bit more than that. I continue to use an old computer and an old scanner. And prefer that to some new $100 piece of junk. As long as you have the space for it, it's a good solution. Paul |

So his problem is likely to return as soon as his XP has died. I am, of course, assuming that the cost of having a dumb machine sitting there idle just for scanning a document once in a blue moon is negligible but for some of us it isn't. How much does a local shop charge to scan a document? -- *Good Guy* Website: http://mytaxsite.co.uk Website: http://html-css.co.uk Email: http://mytaxsite.co.uk/contact-us |
