Today I was offered two optional updates at Windows Update:

Should I allow the download of Silverlight? I gather it's supposed to
substitute for Flash on some websites in Internet Explorer, but I don't
know if it's useful or not.

Unfortunately, silverlight is required for the best free stock charting
website currently available freestockcharts.com

Goes to show there are still sites way behind the technology curve.

I don't think you'll regret it. I've disabled it from the beginning and
the only time I encountered it was on microsoft.com. Some sort of
(video) tutorial...

http://w3techs.com/technologies/deta...rlight/all/all
"Silverlight is used by 0.1% of all the websites."

That's one tenth of one percent. The chart starts at 0.2. That's 0.2%,
or 0.02, and it's gone down from there.

http://w3techs.com/technologies/over...e_language/all

Flash is used 10 times more than Silverlight but Javascript has the
biggest marketshare. Many sites don't use Flash or Silverlight. They
provide a Javascripted player, like jPlayer (http://jplayer.org/) or a
homebrew HTML5 player (although it might still use jquery), for you to
view their media. With Flash and Silverlight both NOT installed on my,
videos at Youtube play using the HTML5 player (right-click on a video to
see HTML5 listed; see https://www.youtube.com/html5).

You might want to revisit all sites in your Favorites or Bookmarks list
to see if any require Flash or Silverlight (and won't use HTML5 +
Javascript).

Math never was my strong point, but I'm pretty sure 0,2% = 0,002 (1% =
0,01).

Thank you, Vanguard! What I did recently was set Flash in Firefox to ask
to activate. I've noticed that very few websites require it, and many of
those that do require it are showing videos that I don't want to see.
I'd rather read the text. So far, this is working well.

This is mainly for UK users.

Silverlight is used by BT Sport, which is available free through a
computer for BT Broadband customers. If you get your TV through cable or
satellite, you won't need it, but since BT Sport is no longer available
on Freeview, a computer is the only way of getting it if you want it.
This could be important to some people (like me), because this year, BT
Sport is the only way to watch live European Champions League and EUFA
Cup matches. Silverlight is installed automatically the first time you
try to watch any BT Sport channel.

In that case you can get the latest version of Thunderbird or relatively
recent version from this link:

That GG guy has been kill-filtered by everybody here and you can do the
same. Ask Jo-Anne how to do it. Who did he insult this time?

Depends.
Some financial (banking, brokerage, credit card) companies require
Silverlight to render some content (e.g. generated reports).

Silverlight is not substitute for Flash. Some site choose to render via
Silverlight due to it being more secure than Flash.

Silverlight also is (was) used by the Ordnance Survey's Get-A-Map
service. The OS is in the process of retiring Get-A-Map and replacing it
with something more sensible. (At a price.)

Silverlight. I needed it to run Microsoft ICE (ICE = Image Composite
Editor). A useful free program for stitching images together into a
panorama. It works for scanning large documents on a small scanner too.

Never heard of any other use for it.

Thank you, Tim. Looks like I probably don't need it.
