Far and above, JV16 Power Tools. Used to be free but now there is a small fee
for it. However it is many tools in one. And I might add you will never worry
about it causing any kind of problem. It has a restore feature and you can
select what you want to delete from the registry which the cleaner finds.

And has never worked in any of my XP installations, it starts to scan
and then hangs up indefinitely. FWIW, it worked in Win2000.

Sorry for butting in, just tried one called "tune up utilities 2004".

Not for the complete idiot but good for most with a vague idea of how
things work.

My system has sped up immensley just when I was going to give up with
these tools and buy myself some more RAM.

This one is free (trial anyway!) unlike Norton.

Go for Norton Utilities which comes with Norton's systems Work. You can't go wrong with tried and tested products. The reason M$ stopped supporting old Reg Cleaner is because it was crap! It was written by a bored M programmer who wanted to prove to his peers that he is a good programmer to keep his job.

Hope this helps.

Works for me in XP - not the most effective cleaner but 4.1a works

Oh sure, it may work. But it's not supported. So when it messes up your
registry, as it eventually will, don't look to Microsoft for help. You'll
have only yourself to blame.

As far as I am concerned this is bad advice. I have used several 'Registry
Cleaners' and the only one to give me problems was RegSupreme which is the
'cleaning engine' of JV16 Power Tools. Fortunately I always backup the
Registry using ERUNT and no damage was done. The problem was repeatable and
I advised the program authors who were singularly unhelpful.

I may have had a 'one off' problem but to say "you will never worry about it
causing any kind of problem" is an unfounded statement. The usefulness of
Registry cleaners in WINXP is very doubtful, they are a placebo. If you are
not entirely confident on how to restore your system in the event of a
Registry problem, don't run a 'cleaner', you won't miss anything.

Many false statements in your reply.
1. RegSupreme is NOT the cleaning engine for JV16 Power Tools.
2. There was/is only ONE author for the registry cleaner.
3. Registry cleaners are a placebo is entirely false. Why do you think
Microsoft developed one?
4. No confidence on restoring the registry is required with JV16 Power Tools,
it is built in.
I suspect you have this mixed up with some other registry cleaner.

Isn't it strange many posters that say registry cleaners are no good also say
you can't speed up your system with a cleaner?.
Yet, they won't use a stop watch and check. I suspect they don't know why
there is a registry in the first place.
