Both Sony and Plextor make good DVD hardware. Look in Wal-Mart Electronics,
Best Buy, Circuit City, to buy one.

Please do not top post to Usenet. It is the sign of a newbie.

Sony does not make their DVD burners. Lite-On makes some of them. Sony
won't support rebranded OEM drives.

Plextor is rumored as using OEM drives from other makers too.

Rather than waste time looking at retail sites, spend some time at
CDFreaks.

http://club.cdfreaks.com/

You will discover that the "experts" who live and sleep this DVD stuff
endorse the NEC 3540 and the BenQ 1640. They also endorse Taiyo Yuden
media. DVD +R is preferred for the 3540. Burn at 8x if the media is 8x
or at 12x if the media is 16x.

In order to get the most out of those forums, you must understand the
difference between a consensus and a collection of anecdotes.

The message is for newbies.

Experienced posters know better than buy Sony products.

Have you gone into your local computer store lately?

They have shelves full of them.

None of them! WinXP does not support DVD drives. You will need 3rd
party software to make it work properly for you.

For internal drive I suggest Sony Black DW-Q30B Dual Layer 16X DVD+ &
DVD-R and RW DVD Burner OEM. Cheap and does exactly what it says on the
tin!!

For 3rd party software, use Roxio Media Centre version 7.5 (version 8.0
is still new and buggy)

Sony is pure crap. Stay away from it or blank discs won't be the only
thing that gets burned.

NEC 3540 or BenQ 1640 are the favorites of the moment at CDFreaks.
Taiyo Yuden is hands down the single most popular media - nothing
comes close to it.

Some people recommend using +R for the NEC,

Your last lines are a little misguided. It only occurs with a very few
recent audio CDs, and there are ways to prevent the rootkit from installing
in the first place.

The DRU-810a is a fast dual layer DVD burner. Installing any of Sonys
drives does not compromise your computer in any way.

Another lame apology for Sony.

The vast majority find Sony's arrogant behavior intolerable.

Installing anything branded by Sony is asking for disaster.

BTW, did you check to see if Sony is going to support that drive?

Also, if you really wanted a Lite-On (which is what that Sony drive
most likely is), why didn't you just buy a Lite-On to begin with and
get support for a lot less cost?
