exe file just disappeared

I leave my PC on all the time and no one else has access to my PC, the other
day I was out of my office for 5 hours and a program called mailwasher was
running to catch all the email spam and it was listed in my system tray.
When I returned it was no longer running and I couldnt restart it again so I
went to the program files and looked for the exe file that loads the program
but it was no longer there and I have no clue why not. Can anyone tell me
how an exe file could disappear on its own?

An explanation might be that it has been deleted by an anti-virus or
anti-spyware programme, which has incorrectly identified the file as
malware. Check security logs etc. Another explanation could be malware
activity.
