Default new sound card

i bought a new computer with on-board sound and am not very impressed with
the quality. i want to install a stand-alone sound card but i understand
that to do this is have to alter "jumpers" so that the computer will
recognize the new one. can anyone explain simple terms?

You either have to change a jumper or disable the on-board sound in
the BIOS. Check the user's guide for your particular motherboard
which should give you the instructions you need. If you don't have
the user's guide, the manufacturer's website whould have either the
info or a downloadable version of the manual.
