Default After sp2, Desktop icons take a long time to appear

Hello all.
I installed SP2 (for xp pro). A problem that I am running into is that
after my desktop appear, it is taking almost a minute for the icon on the
desk top to appear. This was not happening before SP2. Any ideas?

Thanks All

If stuff is running slower after SP2 installation then run defrag as SP2 is a
messy install so it might initially affect performance

backup, Defrag your disk dive,
reboot three times about 30 min appart,
let it run for 24 hours, reboot, let run for 24 hours,
the next reboot will be faster if not before this one,

NFW 2003 is a pig of a program and will add to the
startup time on slower cpu's and low memeory.
On older p/c I would recommend a simpler fire wall,
acually a combo, WFW with ZoneAlarm in the exception list.
Best of both worlds, and free. (But I would get the
pro version if you like it.)

I saw the same thing on my laptop and desktop. However, after several
power-offs and power-ons (I turn my machines off when I'm not going to
be using them for awhile), things sped up considerably. I beleve that XP
"learns" what you use and "pre-fetches" it at initial load and/or
relocates stuff on your HDD.

Anyway, see if thing get better with subsequent reboots.

Hope this helps,
Harvey

If after defragging and rebooting several times it still takes a long
time to load the desk top, then check to see if any of the start up
programs are causing the problem. Use Msconfig and uncheck them one at
a time. Sometimes you need to uninstall and reinstall the culprit.
