Default DEP Message - Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

Occasionally get this message when I boot into XP Pro SP3
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk44/tjubb/IMAGE.jpg

Data Execution Prevention - Generic Host Process for Win32 Services (To
protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.)

Not sure if they are related but when I hibernate randomly when I wake the
computer the IP address is reset to all 000's and trying to reset the
address is futile. Reboot is necessary. I will hibernate at work and then
wake at home and vice versa.

Any thoughts?

Tom

DEP was created to try to stop certain types of malicious behavior from
executing, so DEP warnings need to be taken seriously. Your computer is
almost certainly infected with malware. The fact that your IP address
resets almost guarantees it.

A less likely explanation is that you installed poorly-written software
that is setting off a false-positive DEP warning.

The error means XP is doing it's best to protect you from what it
perceives as a threat.

You should scan your computer for malicious software.

Reduce the chances of malicious software by running some scans.

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware
detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpywa (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/

These can be uninstalled later if desired.

I would not follow any advice to "work around" the problem - fix it
instead.

svchost.exe can have several NT services rolled into it. See:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056

You can also use SysInternal's Process Explorer to see what each
svchost.exe process contains for services within it. Alas, the error
message that you get does not provide the PID (process ID) to let you
know WHICH of the svchost.exe processes it will close (there can be
several of them). With Process Explorer, you could see which one goes
away but you'll have to figure out what each has so you can tell what
disappeared before you allow the close of one of the svchost.exe
processes.

One of the services rolled up under a svchost.exe has a memory
allocation problem and causing the DEP alert. Did this start after you
installed some program?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Execution_Prevention

It doesn't have to be malicious code. It could just be bad code.
