Default Can't update

Hi all,

Running W7 Pro 64b.
Already for a longer time I am unable to update Windows.
It says the update service is not running and I need to restart Windows.
I can keep restarting it until the end of the day, but it won't help.
When I look to the services, I see that the update service has started
and is running. Stopping and restarting does not make any difference.
Windows keeps saying that it isn't running.
What to do next?

Or make a move to Linux? :-)

Thanks for your help.

Fokke

Go back to the services App and stop the Windows Update.

Then go to SoftwareDistribution folder and rename it to:
SoftwareDistribution-old. This folder is located in your windows
folder: C:\Windows\

After renaming the folder, restart your machine and then try to update.
It should work now because your SoftwareDistribution folder is
corrupted. When you restart the services and/or restart the machine,
this folder is recreated automatically.

Or make a move to Linux? :-)

If this is a threat then the answer is YES. Make a swift move to
Linux; Your New Year's resolution should have been "Start using
Linux". Windows is mainly for the intelligent people and you don't
belong to that elite group of individuals.

This page helped me with windows update problems : http://wu.krelay.de/en/

I think the easiest is to disable windows update through control panel,
reboot, then install latest monthly rollup from this page :
http://wu.krelay.de/en/monthly.htm
(after that windows update can be re-enabled, or you install latest monthly
each month...)

I had to deal with that last night (w7 ult), deleting this folder, then
running Windows Update twice worked, it failed the first time, but
worked the 2nd time it was run. To be safe renaming it is probably smarter.

I wrote a tip on this a few days back. Here it is again:

Hi All,

Speaking of a house of cards, if you are getting a stupid "windows
can not update because the update service in not running" error
and the service is actually running.

1) stop the windows update service

2) delete the Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder

3) restart the service

4) reopen the Update Windows dialog. Click the update
button. If it still does not work, on the right, click on
the change setting line. Then change back to the check
updates dialog and try again. Worked four out of four
times for me.

Hi,

Thanks very much. Your trick worked!
I think I must have missed your earlier post.
I'll make a note of this.
