Default CD-ROM drives

Last year I upgraded to use XP. Every time, I wanted to
listen to some music CD, the system always reported the
drive being empty. I thought that the drive (Toshiba
XM6302B) had its life done.

Recently, I purchased a Digital Resarch IDE2410 CD-R/W.
The same problem occured. I figure that there is something
wrong withthe setup because I can play the same CD in my
son's computer which is also running XP.

When I use Windows Explorer, it clearly lists the tracks.
This tells me that the drive is connected well.

I would appreciate if someone can shed light on this.
