Wi-Fi hardware configurations
i want to set up a wi-fi network in my house. i am using a netgear wireless
router and a d-link wireless card for my XP notebook. 1. do you have to have the router physically connected to a pc or host computer? or can it just be plugged in directly into the ethernet cable from the wall? 2. If so, how do you set up the computer to share the internet connection? 3. On the laptop, i need to set up the Gateway:IP of router (192.168.0.1 ) what is the gateway ip, and where do i set it up? 4. what is dhcp server? 5. subnet mask? Thanks for any help!!! |

Hello Mike,
You probably will want to talk to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and maybe Netgear/DLink about how to answer #1 and #2 because I can't really speculate as to what your ISP allows or the capabilities of the Router. It is also unclear whether you are trying to set up the router in relation to some sort of broadband connection, or just setting up a network internally to your home. Typically, however, a router is connected by an ethernet cable to a network. A DHCP server leases IP addresses to clients that request them. This is probably something that is on your ISPs end. Your router may be able to accept an IP address from the ISP and also act as a DHCP server, assigning private IP addresses on your home network (thus the router would be the only device recieving an IP address from the ISP, but other machines could access the internet through the router). In this case, the router would be serving as a gateway to the internet. A gateway is typically a machine or router that directs traffic from one network to a wide area network (such as the internet). A subnet mask is a value that is used to restrict the range of IP addresses that a client can communicate with directly (without going through a gateway/router). These articles may help with some question you habe about what you are trying to do, but I strongly encourage you to contact your ISP, Netgear and DLink to make sure you are setting everything up correctly and that you are in compliance with your ISP's rules. Hi Dan,
Thanks for the info. I will take a look through it. I am trying to set up a 802.11b wireless connection so I can surf the web without using ethernet cables.
