Default USB flash card reader

I've got a USB card reader for my digital camera. It
worked a few weeks ago. Now it shows up in the device
list as "unknown" device. Everywhere I go says "you
don't need drivers, windows XP has drivers built-in"

How on Earth do I make it stop saying unknown device and
make XP's built-in driver load again?

Have you tried the following:
1. disconnect your reader and reboot computer.
2. Insert a "good" flash card into the reader, then connect it to the
computer
