Windows Live Mail: Email Address Not Verified

A friend asked me this question, but I'm stumped. Google wasn't much
help so far, except to draw comfort from knowing others have the same
question.

She runs Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, and uses Windows Live Mail
for email only, no news. On the ribbon, when Home is selected, the
last item on the right says that she's signed in and it shows her
email address, followed by "(Email address not verified)". That last
part bugs her to no end.

Following Google's advice, I logged into her profile on live.com and
immediately noticed that beside her email address it said "Not
Verified - Send verification email?". I clicked to send the
verification email and it arrived in WLM almost immediately. I clicked
the link in the email, which took me back to her profile page at
live.com, only this time it said "Verified" after her email address.
So far, so good, I thought, but nothing has changed in WLM. It
continues to say "Email address not verified".

Does anyone know the secret to getting WLM to accept that her address
is verified?

I haven't seen that message myself, but a quick search for the phrase in
WLMail Help suggests that it's related more to WLMessenger than to WLMail.
There are plenty of hits; this one seems to contain the solution, from MVP

Thanks, RC. I checked the link you provided, and while there's nothing
there that will help me directly, there was a suggestion there to
contact Microsoft, which I suspect I may have to do.

When you say you haven't seen that message, do you mean your WLM has
always said "Email Address Verified"? Do you remember the steps you
took to verify?

Regarding Windows Live Messenger, she has never used it and has no
plans to, so I hope I don't have to push her down that road. Frankly,
I'm not quite seeing the relationship between WL Mail, WL Messenger,
and the whole live.com ID thing.

Nope. I've never seen that message, either.

I have Messenger installed, but never use it. WLMail does sign in
(automatically) when I start it. (I see my small portrait in the Home
Ribbon in WLM 2011.) Remember that I use only POP3, never Hotmail; might
that make a difference?

Frankly, I'm not quite seeing the relationship between WL Mail, WL
Messenger, and the whole live.com ID thing.

Me, too! I've embraced WLMail, but ONLY so far as it resembles OE. I never
wanted more than OE provided, and I've used only the OE-like features in
WinMail and WLMail.

I don't think you've mentioned whether your friend uses Hotmail, Gmail or
some other protocol. Perhaps that is where we are "talking past each
other".

and while I do have remote access, I can't just willy nilly interrupt
her by logging in and she turns it off in the evenings).

I do have a Windows 7 box here, but I don't have WLM installed.

Yes, there is. On the first ("General") tab of Options, the second
check-box says, "Automatically log on to Windows Live Messenger". I don't
recall the default, but the box is UNchecked on my WLM 2011.

That setting has been available in the last several versions of WLM - and
maybe back in OE6, too, but I've forgotten. As it says in my Sign, I'm
using WLM 2011 build 15.4.3502.0922, also known as Wave 4, also known as
WLMail with the Ribbon UI. We find the Options page via a slightly
different (and not very discoverable) way on the Ribbon UI, but once we find
it, it's the same multi-tabbed page that we've been using in OE/WM/WLMail.
In Wave 3 (and prior), we displayed the Menu Bar and then clicked Tool |
Options. In Wave 4, we click the unlabeled (unless we hover for the Tool
Tip) icon in the upper left corner, then choose Options | Mail.

Since I don't use Messenger, I don't know if that will solve the problem.
Please let us know what you learn.

called "Connecting to Windows Live services". She had it set to "Sign
in" (the leftmost option of the two) so I switched it to "Stop signing
in" and it seems to have fixed the cosmetic problem.

After making that change and going back to the WLM GUI the rightmost
item in the Home ribbon now simply says "Sign In". It no longer shows
her email address there, nor does it display any kind of 'verified'
status. This is very much preferred by her.

Since I don't use Messenger, I don't know if that will solve the problem.
Please let us know what you learn.

So far, "Stop signing in" seems to have done it. Thanks for your help.

The mystery may be getting deeper. :(

On the Connection tab, my "Stop signing in" button is grey. (The left
button there says, "Sign in with another ID".) If I click it, I get a small
window that says, "Stop synchronizing contacts and calendar events. If you
stop signing in, you'll stop synchronizing contacts and calendar events for
." Then it offers a "Cancel" button - and another "Stop
signing in" button. I click "Cancel".

Note that I almost always use my Grande account, but I DO have that other
MSN POP3 account and use it occasionally. Mostly, it just sits there
receiving mostly SPAM emails. I also usually have Outlook 2010 running in
the background, collecting the same MSN emails there - and holding a
calendar and some contacts. No, I don't know why I do that, but it seems to
work for me.

I've never tried hard enough to understand all the
MSN/Hotmail/Live/Messenger/Hotmail Connector... interrelationships. As I
said, all I really want WLMail to do is what OE did for me a decade ago.
And my current setup handles that for me pretty well (except for the
oft-mentioned faults of Wave 4, such as the lack of proper quoting). I hope
that you can use what I've told you to help your friend. But please don't
ask me to dig into those murky depths. :^{
