XP and "Partition Magic" clean up a 98SE problem
My guess is your registry is fouled up and you need to do a reformat of C:
and reinstall everything. PITA, I know. If it isn't this then perhaps you have a hardware problem like memory or a motherboard problem. Since it seemed to happen after you did a registry cleanup I tend to think it is not likely HW. Win98SE is a great stable OS so changing it to XP with the hope of more stability curing the problem is unlikely. Going to a new install of XP will probably fix it since you will do the equivalent of a reformat and reinstall of apps. Upgrading XP ontop of the flakey 98SE is not IMO recommended since you may just carry over the problems. Billh "Cheers" wrote in message ... Rick and The Group: I am considering going to XP 'only' 'cause of a series of crashes I am experiencing with 98SE. (The fact that I am getting this msg out via OE is reason to tip a tall one.) All has been fine for a couple of years. One day I dwnld'd Norton's Virus Def updates (NSW2001). Then did a routine registry check/cleanup. Boom! It, 98SE, has never been the same since. The 'blue' screens drive this user nuts, simple things like closing a window cause an explorer error msg. Rebooting forces, sometimes, a registry check. I reinstalled 98SE - normally seems fine - saved a copy of the registry. Boom! Strange things happen. Click to print. Blue screen. Nothing seems to point to a common thread, common problem. Have considered Fdisking my 'C' and reinstalling 98SE all over again, from scratch. Apps are on D and E. However, I suspect I will have to reinstall them also simply because the normal apps, like Office '97, have their hooks in 'C'. Do I understand this correctly? The reinstalls are keeping me from starting from scratch and trying to find a way to save what I have. Is this fruitless? Cannot Defrag (w/MS's utility - ALWAYS, always crashes). Cannot execute an anti-virus (via Norton On-Line always crashes blue screens.) At a loss as to what to do next. Fdisk and reinstall 98SE or let an upgrade, like XP, clean up whatever mess there is. Does this make any sense at all?? Best Regards, Wayne G. Dengel Sarasota, FL "Rick "Nutcase" Rogers" wrote in message ... Hi, WinXP's partitioning software (diskmgmt.msc) is not a whole lot more functional than fdisk - basically the only difference is that it works with NTFS as well. Stick with a third-party program for more functional partitioning capabilities. PM will require an upgrade to support WinXP's NTFS file system if you are using an older version. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers aka "Nutcase" MS-MVP - Win9x - http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Associate Expert - WinXP - Expert Zone - www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone Win98 Help - www.rickrogers.org "Cheers" wrote in message ... Before I consider upgrading from 98 SE: Pls, do any of the XP versions include means to partition a drive as does Partition Magic? How about something like Boot Magic? Thank You! |
