seems to be that older files were FAT addressed while XP

can use to gain access to the FAT files??

If I understand your post, the problem is not the file system.
Opening or saving files from within Word from any removable media can lead
to file corruption {frequently}.
Try coping the files from your JAZ drive to your hard drive. Then if Word
still does not open the files normally, try the recover text from any file
type in the Word Open dialog {it is under Type of Files}.
