Default Advice Required Please for New Install

I am presently running on 98SE with fairly frequent re-boots needed
and am thinking of changing to XP. I have ordered an Home Edition,
Full Version, (I'm fed up with having to save the old Win 3.1 floppies
every time I re-install).

Because I'm scared of trying a new system I'm thinking of setting up
initially as dual boot. I would very much appreciate experienced
users views on this and on the following.

If I do set up for dual boot, do I need to remove existing programs
such as Office 2000, Norton System Works 2003 & Eudora from the Win98
operation before I install them on the XP operation? Or, if not,
would they be usable on whichever system I booted into?

Thanks

John Dix

Hi,

If you setup a dual boot, you will need to install the programs from =
under the secondary OS (WinXP). There is no need to uninstall them in =
the Win98 system first. For that matter, to conserve space, you can =
install them to the exact same program folder under which they are =
currently installed.

Should you choose to upgrade and backup the existing system, see:

Thanks, Rick, your second sentence is precisely what I needed to know.

You would only need to keep a win98 'proper' CD around, but as you have
ordered it. . .

If you set up a dual boot you have two quite separate operating systems,
and they would need to be in separate partitions (so you would have to
have some third party program to resize your Win98 one to make space
unless you already have a second primary one. You then install from the
98, running the CD, changing the suggested Upgrade to New Install, and
when it asks where, hit ESC so as to select the second partition.

You would then need to reinstall all this application software. But
could install them into the same actual folders as before, so that the
only impact on the XP partition would be files put into the Windows
folder, and registry entries.

Thanks, Alex, my win98 CD is itself an upgrade - I stupidly threw out
the original on getting the upgrade CD so now I have to go back to my
old floppies.

If I set up as dual boot and slowly install programs for use on XP
using the existing folders, what happens when I decide to remove
win98? Do the folders retain both sets of program files?
