Default Scanner Problem

I installed an new xp driver for old Acer 310p scanner.
When I try to use it, error message - TWAIN.DLL missing, copy missing
file to windows folder.

I did just that. Up popped windows message -insert CD-ROM, re-install,
system unstable.
Took me hours, with updates and all that, to get system back to normal.

I uninstalled scanner, cleaned registry, downloaded driver again, and
the same happened. Copy Twain.dll, Insert CD....windows unstable.
Another 3 hours.

I really would hate to have to buy a new scanner, this one is good
enough for the occasional scanning that comes my way.

Go to
www.scantips.com
It has a wealth of information getting old scanners to work.
This knowledge base article says your scanner is supported by WIA. Have you tried
letting Windows detect your scanner without installing the software?
