Default Internet access blocked by "ignored incoming call"

When connected to the internet, either browsing or
collecting mail, I keep getting a message "You have just
ignored an incoming call. Please press OK." All incoming
and outgoing traffic ceases and eventually after a few
repeats my modem connection to the internet closes. BT
assure me that 'call waiting' is not active on my line
and I do not have this problem with the same provider
using Win 98 (2)- only with XP Home on a P4 with a 56k
modem. Any ideas how I can source this "incoming call" or
generally cure this pest.
