I have a "Western Digital" 40Gb hard drive disk and I
want to get my computer to recognise it...but, it shows
up in the control panel/system/hardware/device manager
list, but it doesnt in windows explorer or my
computer...I want to get this disk to work to I can put
all my programs and stuff like that from my old 20Gb hard-
drive...I've tried to look up this disk on the Windows
Compatibility List on the windows XP website, but I cant
figure out how to find the listings...what is going on????

If it shows up in the device manager, and not in windows explorer, it is a
good chance that you don't have any partitions on it (this is normal if you
newly purchased the hdd).

This is a simple procedure to check this:

1. Click start, then right-click My Computer
2. Click Manage
3. From the tree, chose "Disk Management"
4. You should see your disk in the list bellow, (with other physical storage
devices, such as CD drives).
5. Click on the you new hdd in the list bellow, and then right click, and
create a new partition. Format it. You can also choose a drive letter for
it.
6. You should be able to see it in a windows explorer now.

Best regards.
