Default Device Manager Empty - nothing works

A friend did something to the PC. The device manager is
now blank. Therefore, the modem doesn't work, nor sound
card, etc.

Does anyone know how to get the list of devices back?

Computer owner's prayer: Lord, protect me from my friends. The
plug-and-play devices will be detected the next time you start your
computer. You must be prepared to insert the disks with drivers
when prompted. The non plug-and-play devices will have to be found
manually and the drivers installed.
