Default Shut Down

When I shut down the computer gets to "Windows is
shuttung down" and then freezes. I have to switch off at
mains.

It may not be that fun, but give this a try:

Click START, then 'Help and Support', then enter "list of troubleshooters"
into the search box then click the underlined result shown on the left....

You'll get a lengthy list of Troubleshooting steps for various problems you
might encounter...

Select the Startup/Shutdown link, then work through the problem.

It'll be sort of like doing your taxes, but at least you won't have to
write a check!

Post back here if it doesn't get you anywhere.
