Unable to create a PPPoE connection in XP
Hi,
I'm unable to create a PPPoE connection using Windows so I can use my DSL modem. My DSL modem was working fine up to a week ago and then it quit, unexpectedly. I'm using an Efficient Networks Speedstream 5260 DSL modem, if that helps. I've already tried system restore but it doesn't work. My ISP told me I have a non-uft modem that has to have a PPPoE connection created for it to be used. My ISP has no software to do this as Windows XP is capable of creating the PPPoE connection. However, when trying to create the PPPoE connection in the New Connection Wizard, the only option I have to describe my connection is "a broadband connection that is always on." According to my ISP, I must select "a broadband connection that requires a username and password" for authentication reasons but it is greyed out. I found a KB article that sounds like it references the issue (Q320558) and I haven't tried it yet today (and I'm hesitant to make changes to the registry) but I need to have this issue resolved quickly and i was wondering if anyone else knew of this issue and, if so, how did you resolve it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Unable to create a PPPoE connection in XP
Hi, Tiger.
I've never used PPPoE; my ADSL connection is "always on". But I think you've made a wrong turn before getting to the New Connection Wizard. You are getting the Network Setup Wizard instead. :( That particular wizard is for building your own network, not for connecting to the Internet. In other words, what you are seeing is how you would connect multiple computers in your own house, and letting any of those computers connect to the outside world. But I'm only guessing about this kind of stuff. I'm just one guy with one computer and one POTS phone line; no net but the Internet. I've never had to use this wizard. In Control Panel, there are two items right together. The first says Network Connections; the next says Network Setup Wizard - which is where you've been. Network Connections produces an Explorer window, which may be empty in your case, since you've not created any connections yet. Do not click File | Network Setup Wizard...; that is where you've already been. In Network Connections, click File | New Connection... You should see the New Connection Wizard. From there, it's pretty intuitive: Connect to the Internet; Set up my connection manually; and, finally, Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password. This is where I leave you, because I always take the other fork in the road. (When I click the always-on option and Next, I get a window that says I should already BE connected, so I have to go set up my static IP and DNS numbers for my NIC. I don't know how these get set up for PPPoE.) New Connection Wizard and Network Setup Wizard sound like the same thing, but they're not. RC -- R. C. Unable to create a PPPoE connection in XP
Thanks for the quick response, R.C.!
However, you misunderstand me. I never tried to use the Network Setup wizard. What I'm doing specifically is this: open IE, go to Internet Options, Connections tab, Setup. This jumps me right in to Network Connection wizard. At this point I select: Connect to the Internet, Set up my Connection Manually. It is at this point that I hit the wall. I need to select from the next screen "broadband connection that requires a username and password" but my only choice is "broadband connection that is always on". I need to choose the first option to finish setting up my PPPoE connection but I don't know what to do! So do you have any ideas, or anyone else for that matter? Again, thanks for the help and quick response. -mike "R. C. White" wrote: Hi, Tiger. I've never used PPPoE; my ADSL connection is "always on". FWIW
My set-up has either the DSL 'modem' software or the router connecting using PPPoE. Bill On Wed, 20 Oct 2004 15:57:39 +0100, Alex Nichol wrote: mike wrote: However, you misunderstand me. Unable to create a PPPoE connection in XP
My ISP is Earthlink, if that helps. I already spoke to Earthlink and they
were the ones who assured me the problem was with Windows. If the modem is proprietary and requires some special confiruation with Earthlink they didn't tell me. So I'm assuming there's nothing else on their end, but who knows what their motives are for support. Anyway, all the options are listed. Specifically, I can choose between "Connect with a dial-up modem", "Connect with a broadband connection that requires a username and password" and "Connect with a broadband connection that is always on". My only option is the third - always on broadband. I need option two so I can provide the name of the ISP and my username and password but it is greyed out. Does this help at all? Thanks again for your help! - mike I'm with you to here... I need to select from the next screen "broadband connection that requires a username and password" but my only choice is "broadband connection that is always on". Do you mean that the first choice doesn't appear at all? Or that it's there but you can't click its radio button? Even though I don't want it, I can click there and then Next takes me to a screen that asks for my ISP name, and then to a screen where I can enter my Username and Password. If you mention the name of your ISP, someone here might recognize it and know if they have any special requirements. RC -- R. C. Unable to create a PPPoE connection in XP
Hi, Mike.
I need option two so I can provide the name of the ISP and my username and password but it is greyed out. Does this help at all? Well, yes and no. :{ It helps me understand what you are seeing. But I've never seen that situation, so I don't know what to suggest next. As I said, I've never used PPPoE, so I'll let the experts help with that. Reading further in the thread, I see that you are getting some responses from experienced PPPoE users, so I'll back off and just be a "lurker" to see what I can learn from this thread. ;^} Good Luck.
