I have had a problem with burning cds, both data and music. They fail to burn,
or they become corrupt. I can't read them in 98, also a direct access
component crashes when auto play tries to read a disk I burned. I downloaded
Q320174, but it wouldn't install over service pack 2. I need to backup a file
now and then, but with this problem it has become impossible. please help me.

What kind of DVD? What process are you using to burn the disk? Are you
trying to copy a commercial DVD?

If you were trying to copy a commercial encrypted DVD it won't work unless
you remove the encryption. There are programs available (Google) but be
aware that it's not legal, thanks to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of
1998, which made "fair use" of DVDs illegal. For CD copying, I don't know
about Real Player or its capabilities. You're bound to be better off with a
third-party app such as Nero. You can use Windows Media PLayer to rip CD
audio to your hard drive.

Forget Realplayer for jobs like this.... search the web for DVD Shrink and
DVD Decrypter, they are both freeware. DVD Shrink will reduce double layer
DVDs so they can be burned to a single layer DVD, which is what most home
systems still have. Once you've reencoded the DVD, DVD Decrypter will burn
it for you. The process can be a bit confusing at first, but with a little
study it's easy as pie.

For music look for Exact Audio Copy.

For both jobs, it's not (usually) just like copying a file... it's a
multi-step process which takes a bit of leaning.... but hell, you wouldn't
own a computer if you weren't into learning!!
