Default Event Viewer

When I run the Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) and go to Event Viewer (Local)
System I noticed I have a long list of errors with a Source of Service
Control Manager, Event 7001, and Property Description of: The Remote
Access Connection Manager service depends on the Telephony service which
failed to start because of the following error: The service cannot be
started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices
associated with it.

As I have no telephone modem installed (I use cable) how do I stop this
error from appearing in Event Viewer - to me it makes no since to have time
wasted checking on this service/event.

In Services (services.msc) I do have Telephony disabled.

With cable you do not need Remote Access Connection Manager service, unless
you are using Internet Connection Sharing or Windows Firewall. Disable it.
However, see the Note: below.

place this service into automatic. If you use a hardware gateway or router,
this service is not required.]]

I have cable, Comcast, and I do not use Windows firewall. I have these two

Wes, please don't depend on BlackViper!! Various Services have to be set
back to their defaults, otherwise other Services depending those will not
work.

Will,

I understand service dependencies.

The OP has no dial-up modem. Apparently his cable connection is fine

Hi Will,

I brought ICS up. It seems to be one of the five reasons for having the
Remote Access Connection Manager service running in the first place.

1. Using a telephone modem.
2. Using Virtual Private Networking (VPN).
3. Using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).
4. Some ISP's logon processes may need it.
5. Using Windows Firewall.

If none of those five things are needed, then the Remote Access Connection
Manager service doesn't need to run.

Fax service, Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service and Remote Access
Connection Manager service all depend on the Telephony service.

If none of those services are needed for anything, they should be disabled.

If any of them do not have something that can be exploited now, they
probably will in the future.

How many critical updates have we had since XP SP2 came out?

Thanks for the answers - I will check them out.

I AM NOT using ICS. I AM NOT using VPN. I have a direct connection to the

Wesley,

Read the answers and suggestions.

Went and checked Services, found Remote Access Connection Manager to be in
Manual - changed to Disabled.

Also, opened Event Viewer to see listing for today 01 Aug - found nothing;
last Error was for yesterday. Since I had not yet changed anyhting I haven't
a clue as to why, today, there were no errors (as mentioned in my original
message).

Rebooted with the one change in Services and everything is working OK -
browser, e-mail, etc.

To me, if the Telephony Service is disabled there should be a link somewhere
to tell the user to disable all the other Remote ... stuff you mentioned;
assuming also the other stuff you listed is also not required.

Last time I checked the Black Viper site was down but I do have a copy of
his listings for review and I used the book "Hacking Windows XP" by Steve
Sinchak to review unneeded services but it only lists the Remote Procedure
Call - the others you mentioned were not in Steve's book.

Again - thanks. I'll just have to periodically review things to see what
else may happen.

Fax service, Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service and Remote
Access
Connection Manager service all depend on the Telephony service.

If none of those services are needed for anything, they should be
disabled.

If any of them do not have something that can be exploited now, they
probably will in the future.

How many critical updates have we had since XP SP2 came out?

Hi Jerry,

As to which services need to run or not, this can inspire some heated
debates. My opinion is, if you do not need it, do not run it.

As you well know Services can be complicated.

There was probably no error today for Remote Access Connection Manager

changed the setting.

Wesley,

After I fired up tonight I checked Event Viewer and there were items listed
but the long list of errors was not there. My guess is it was because I had
disabled the Remote Accesss Connection Manager as I mentioned earlier today.

Why I got a list with todays date tonight rather than earlier this afternoon
is unknown.

OK - I cheked the Dependecies tab to see what you were talking about. But, I
think it still would have made more sense for there to be some kind of
automatic notification of the dependencies. Oh well, can't have everything
byt at least I solved a minor glitch

Wesley,

Another glitch popped up in my home network.

If I have Remote Access Connection Manager (RACM) disabled then I cannot see
my second system, with XP Home, from my XP Pro system. Opening Services and
changing RACM back to Manual then allows me to see the Pro system from the
Home system but not vice versa. Rebooting then allows me to see Home from
Pro

So, to reduce the Event Viewer error messages I will have to leave RACM
disabled until I want to use my home network then I can set it to Manual but
a reboot is required.

Why are things so confusing and not documented?

Jerry,

It sounds to me like you need the Remote Access Connection Manager running.

Set RACM to Automatic. That way you should avoid seeing the errors and see

That's the deal with services. Sometimes you have to experiment.

You're correct, the documentation on services is slim.

Connection Manager service all depend on the Telephony service.

If none of those services are needed for anything, they should be
disabled.

If any of them do not have something that can be exploited now, they
probably will in the future.

How many critical updates have we had since XP SP2 came out?

Wesley,

Changing the RACM to Automatic did no good, got error 1068 when trying to
start it. Still got many Errors when I checked after a reboot; went back to
Manual

Jerry,

It sounds to me like you need the Remote Access Connection Manager
running.

Set RACM to Automatic. That way you should avoid seeing the errors and
see
your other machine when you need to.

That's the deal with services. Sometimes you have to experiment.

You're correct, the documentation on services is slim.

Wesley,

Another glitch popped up in my home network.

If I have Remote Access Connection Manager (RACM) disabled then I cannot
see my second system, with XP Home, from my XP Pro system. Opening
Services and changing RACM back to Manual then allows me to see the Pro
system from the Home system but not vice versa. Rebooting then allows me
to see Home from Pro

So, to reduce the Event Viewer error messages I will have to leave RACM
disabled until I want to use my home network then I can set it to Manual
but a reboot is required.

Why are things so confusing and not documented?

Wesley,

After I fired up tonight I checked Event Viewer and there were items
listed but the long list of errors was not there. My guess is it was
because I had disabled the Remote Accesss Connection Manager as I
mentioned earlier today.

Why I got a list with todays date tonight rather than earlier this
afternoon is unknown.

OK - I cheked the Dependecies tab to see what you were talking about.
But, I think it still would have made more sense for there to be some
kind of automatic notification of the dependencies. Oh well, can't have
everything byt at least I solved a minor glitch

Hi Jerry,

As to which services need to run or not, this can inspire some heated
debates. My opinion is, if you do not need it, do not run it.

As you well know Services can be complicated.

There was probably no error today for Remote Access Connection Manager
because it was in Manual and nothing had tried to start it before you
changed the setting.
----

All services have a Dependencies tab.

This service depends on the following system components.
[[Displays the services that are required by this service to run

The following system components depend on this service.

Open Services, double click on Telephony and click the Dependencies

Remote Procedure Call is a *very* important service.

There are two locations that have Black Viper's Web Site. Here's
one...

Nobody has heard anything from Black Viper for quite some time. Or at
least
I haven't seen anything posted.

Wesley,

Read the answers and suggestions.

Went and checked Services, found Remote Access Connection Manager to
be in
Manual - changed to Disabled.

Also, opened Event Viewer to see listing for today 01 Aug - found
nothing;
last Error was for yesterday. Since I had not yet changed anyhting I
haven't a clue as to why, today, there were no errors (as mentioned
in
my original message).

Rebooted with the one change in Services and everything is working OK
- browser, e-mail, etc.

To me, if the Telephony Service is disabled there should be a link
somewhere to tell the user to disable all the other Remote ... stuff
you
mentioned; assuming also the other stuff you listed is also not
required.

Last time I checked the Black Viper site was down but I do have a
copy
of his listings for review and I used the book "Hacking Windows XP"
by
Steve Sinchak to review unneeded services but it only lists the
Remote
Procedure
Call - the others you mentioned were not in Steve's book.

Again - thanks. I'll just have to periodically review things to see
what
else may happen.

Hi Will,

I brought ICS up. It seems to be one of the five reasons for having
the Remote Access Connection Manager service running in the first
place.

1. Using a telephone modem.
2. Using Virtual Private Networking (VPN).
3. Using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).
4. Some ISP's logon processes may need it.
5. Using Windows Firewall.

If none of those five things are needed, then the Remote Access
Connection Manager service doesn't need to run.

Fax service, Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service and
Remote
Access
Connection Manager service all depend on the Telephony service.

If none of those services are needed for anything, they should be
disabled.

If any of them do not have something that can be exploited now, they
probably will in the future.

How many critical updates have we had since XP SP2 came out?
