40tude dialog on windows 8
Trying to set up my new windows 8 machine with 40tude dialog.
After I go through the install process, I try to download the groups. I iget a timeout connection error. I close the program then reopen later. "Is there a second instance running?" No there is not. apparently 40tude.com no longer exists. So there's no way to get any help or check the old resources that way. Short of thunderbird and windows live mail, is there anything else out there that WILL work on windows 8 with the same attributes of 40tude? Xnews not! |

Dialog doesn't work well on Windows 7 unless it is installed into a non-Program Files directory, i.e., it has to be installed in a directory which is not one of the two Windows 7 standard program file directories. Maybe you're having the same problem in Windows 8. Since you gave relatively little information, and none about where you used to be successfully running Dialog, the above might not be relevant to you. You might do better asking in a Windows 8 newsgroup. alt.comp.os.windows-8 comes to mind. Please cross-post if you do, so we can learn of your progress. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

Both run on win7 so cannot see a problem with 8. If you go for MesNews, download the two plug-ins: Allow formulations and Plug-in adds button to middle bar. http://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/ http://www.mesnews.net/gb/ -- mick |

There's also a good German-language support group -- de.comm.software.40tude-dialog -- but I wouldn't bother those Krauts unless I spoke "perr-fekkt" German. As for the OT's problem, he could try backing up and then delete his data folder, and then create a new one. And Dialog should not be located in the Programs folder. |

Maybe you're having the same problem in Windows 8. Now you've worried me - I've had it in C:/Program Files (86)/ for some years and it's yet to fail in any regard. It probably will now. Oh dear. I didn't mean to jinx you. My apologies. IIRC, the failures were things like an inability to save some changes I made, such as adding a new newsgroup. Dialog didn't succeed in saving them until I moved it to my fake programs folder. That is all a couple of years old, so the mental fuzzies may be interfering... It might be fun - or maybe not - for me to move the folder into (x86) to check it out, in case the truth is that you are unjinxing me. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

No complaints. Once I started using the built-in help (.chm style), I didn't have a problem using the program. I would have been completely baffled, without access to the help. And I think the data folder it is writing, gets redirected to "roaming". That's the fallback for backward compatibility, for programs that insist in writing to the Program folder. The files don't actually go into the Program folder, but go into another directory. The intention is to prevent overwrite exploits, while at the same time, not preventing older programs from working properly. I don't know the "techie" name for this feature, but I presume it has a fancy name. Paul |

Short of thunderbird and windows live mail, is there anything else out there that WILL work on windows 8 with the same attributes of 40tude? Xnews not! I just installed it under Windows 8 running in a Virtual Machine. It works just fine in the standard c:\Program Files (86)\ directory. I added the last known build 2.0.15.1 (84) on top of 2.0.15.1 38 build and the British English dictionary, and it still works fine. E-mail and mail both work fine. Maybe you hadn't got the (very old but) latest versions? They're here if you need them http://dialog.datalist.org/downloads/download.html Install from 4d2b38.exe into the standard directory, then copy the .exe file from Dialog.84.zip over the original. For my test, I just used 4d2b38.exe, and didn't bother patching, and it all still seemed to work fine. That filename roughly decodes to "40tude dialog release 2 beta 38". The OPs problem could be firewall or network related. Paul |

It won't help you much this time, but for future reference, the "Wayback Machine" at archive.org keeps copies of many popular old websites, and can show you how they looked in the past.
