Default Problems wit Windows 8.1

I am having two problems wit Windows 8.1 w/update. Intel i3 processor
4gb ram and 500gb drive

First is generally occurring problem. Whether I have opened a Metro
Program or not, frequently when I shut the computer down, there is a
program that prevents the system from shutting down. If I cancel and
they try to shut down it is sometimes gone, some time the OS has to
close it. I could use the Task Manager IF I knew what the program was.

It is standard practice to close all programs when I am done with that
program.

I am also frustrated that with the upgrade to 8.1 metro programs were
supposed to be able to be closed with the X. This is not happening.
Yes I know the short cuts and other ways to shut down programs. Some
windows programs will not close regardless of what you do.

Second. Something is happening I though I am not sure what.
Periodically something goes wrong in Windows 8.1 and it causes other
programs to load abnormally. As an example when this happens, both
Firefox and Thunderbird wants to be reset before they will open.
HOWEVER to resolve this problem all I have to do is to restart the
computer. It does not work to close the program and reopen it as the
error still is present. I thought it was associated with MS upgrades,
but it happened this morning but to my knowledge there has been no
upgrades this week.

It in MS so it is probably a "Feature" the will have to be lived with
but it would be nice to resolve either of both.

And since others aren't seeing this, there is something
about your system that is different.

If I had to guess:

1) Malware (rootkit etc)
2) Obscure AV product no one else here uses,
which interferes with how the system works.

Give an inventory of all the stuff on your system
which is "out of the ordinary".

Along with Paul's suggestions, I'd do a memory check. You can create a boot
CD with MemTest86+ http://www.memtest.org/#downiso. If you have Fast
Boot enabled (by default), you'll have to boot into Windows, then put the CD
in and reboot. If you have more than one stick of RAM, it may be faster
testing one at a time, or in pairs if your PC requires that.

Do you have any programs like a KVM running while you're up? I use Mouse
Without Borders to use the same KB & mouse for two different computers, and
occasionally (well, more like sometimes), it will hang but Win8.1 tells me
that's the program that's not shutting down.

Is this *only* Firefox and Thunderbird? If so, I've occasionally had a
problem where Firefox won't open because it apparently didn't properly
close down last time. Although it isn't showing on the screen, it
shows in the list in Task Manager, and sometimes even refuses to obey
the "End Task" command from there. This has only happened rarely, and
is usually cured by reinstalling Firefox. I don't use Thunderbird, but
they may be related.

If other programs are affected too, then clearly it's something else,
but could it be a Firefox problem rather than a Windows problem?

I've seen this on occassion, but not with a Metro program. It's usually
Firefox or Thunderbird that "hangs around" long after I've closed them. I
usually wait a couple of seconds and let the OS shut them down.

The "X", which I find very annoying, was introduced with 8.1 U1. Win 8.1
does not have the "X", and I really wish I knew of some way to get rid of
that option, as it actually obstructs the way that I've become accustomed to
closing Metro apps.

Yeah, I really wish MS had stuck to their guns on that one, too, but
for a new user it's far more intuitive.

I was hoping that MS would have offered it as a setting in preferences, even
if it defaulted to the "X" so that new users wouldn't have to search for a
way to enable it. Perhaps in U2...
