Default Way way OT but someone might know

Thanks in advance if anyone has an answer. I know I'm way OT but I read
here regularly and know there's a lot of good info here. Here's my
question. Is there any way, online, to get someone's telephone number?
They have a land line and it's a listed number. Not a big deal. I can
make a call and get the #. More just curious. Back in the day you could
google a name and location and a number would usually pop up. Now days
there's a hundred different services who will tell you everything you
would ever want to know or not want to know but run you through a whole
gauntlet before you even find out how much they want to charge. Not even
going there.
Thanks much. Doug

http://www.corp.att.com/directory

which redirects to

http://www.anywho.com/whitepages

Assuming your own number ends in "7078" is seems to work!

Search on "USA 411", you'll find several look-up services.

They all look like they're going to want $$. Nothing I've seen just pops
up with the phone #. They show the person and the address but all I see
after that is give us your credit card if you want the #.

your first link didn't work and your second link went off to put
together a report which they would probably want money for.
How did you get anywho to give you the # for free?

Good question. Physical paper phone books are on their way out. So,
does that mean that there will be no way to look up a number without
paying for the privilege? I don't like that.

I used the anywho link, typed in your name and also got the number
ending in 7078 at a CA address.

(I plugged in my own name and got only a listing from 3+ years ago.)

Whitepages, OTOH, yielded someone with your name in NC with a phone
number ending in 8461.

(Whitepages has nothing for me.)

Try www.411.com

I just used it to look by bro-in-law, address and phone came up, no cost.

I get address, sister, wife etc and then every link goes to "people
finder" or some other wants $$ site.

I just input name and zip code on the first 411.com page that comes up
and off it goes.

Yeh, I can get my own # also, but when I put in the person I'm looking
for half ways across the country all I get are other search site options.

Wierd!

I just put in your name and clicked 'Find' it gave your full name,
address and phone number, maybe it helps that I'm in the UK?

it's possible that IF the person has told their phone company to LIST
their number that you will find it. But if they have told their phone
company NOT to list their number then those "free" services won't give
it to you for free. So in short, it's possible that LISTED numbers
show up for free and UNlisted ones cost money.

I'll be checking in with them this weekend and ask about the listed
versus unlisted. That's probably what the deal is. I know it used to be
listed but maybe they changed it for some reason. Haven't talked to them
for awhile.

Did some random searches on a couple other folks and both came up with
numbers.

Oh well, another one of those mysteries of life. Or as a buddy of mine
decided years ago, "I don't answer "why" questions".

Thanks all

It varies from country to country. It would help if you told us where
you are.

Here in UK, there's a free on-line telephone directory at
www.thephonebook.bt.com/

There's listed, unlisted, and non-published. Non-published can be accessed
by calling Directory Assistance but unlisted can't.

Maybe, but would have to narrow it down to country, city, street, etc. to be certain.
