NAS Access
ISP to Router to WiFi and LAN.
NAS on LAN, call it NAS1. I do have additional NAS, call it NAS2. I would like to make available the NAS1 or a NAS1 folder to user via WiFi. So I set up an additional user PWD protected access to the WiFi. Then how do I restrict this user to the NAS1 ? i.e. user cannot access the internet or anything else on my home network. What is the best way ? Can someone please provide the baby steps to set this up. I am not experienced in any of this. Thank you. |

One way is to set up an access point that has a wired Ethernet connection to the NAS, and that's all. When you or your guest connect to that access point, you only get access to that NAS and nothing else. No other LAN resources, and no Internet. If the NAS has two Ethernet ports, you could potentially connect it to both networks - your current LAN and the stubby LAN that only consists of the NAS and the AP. There are potential security issues when a device straddles networks like that, but in a home environment I think they'd be minimal. Note that any WiFi router can be converted to an access point. There are multiple web sites that provide the steps needed, including the excellent www.practicallynetworked.com. Example: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...cess_point.htm -- Char Jackson |
