Thanks. That sounds familiar, now that
you explain it. I re-installed last week and
saw the 30-day notice, then figured they
must have changed the plan. I may try out
AVG and Avira, though, out of curiosity. I
like the idea that AVG provides definitions
downloads, so it doesn't have to be allowed
to constantly update.

The clients I typically load Avast on aren't really that tech savvy,
so, for them, updating on it's own without them having to do anything
else is a plus.

However...For those who do want to do their own manual updates for
whatever reason (I tend to copy these to a 'work disc' I take with me
for onsites to reduce installation time, essentially) there is this:

Woops. spoke too soon. I found an AVG full version installer
and downloadable definitions.

http://www.avg.com/en-us/download.prd-gsr-free

Haven't tried it yet to see whether it's adware,
nagware, etc.

I found the AVG link by starting at this useful page:

https://www.raymond.cc/blog/download...tup-installer/

It mentions AVG in the link, but actually
provides directions for getting full installers for
several brands. Though the AVG advice (go
to the support page) still required me to
get past more obstacles. That link still went
to a CNet online installer. Only the "more info"
link led to a real download.

I got away from AVG as they want to install this new "ZEN" version that
allows you to protect other devices all in one like your phone. I'm not
there yet.

I have Avast loaded and it's all free with no subscription. And as for
prompting to upgrade, well that's the side effect of free IMHO.

If you look at Newegg or subscribe to there daily emails they sometimes
have AV products for 1 year subscription either really low $10 or free. I
know Acronis backup was just offered for $30 with $30 MIR, or free, I got
one, its a no subscription version so it never times out.

But you're right. I tried a bit of searching and for Avast the best I can
find is the stub. Even the link I have is for a stub. I thought I had a
full download link. OOPS.

I run the Free Avast with Game Mode ON and rarely get interruptions.
I've been using the Free Avast for quite a few years.

For something this important, you probably shouldn't be cheap.

Good AV software isn't that expensive.

I've used Kaspersky for several years and never a problem.

That's the one for which I couldn't find the full download link.

As for AVG: you're right - Avast's forum has a board for AVG Beta.

I have NEVER paid for antivirus. Always used free and "safe hex". In all
those I have never been infected. The main reason why I have antivirus
is that I do online banking and my bank advises to use antivirus.

I consider paid antivirus to be a waste of money.

Same here, especially as it's an annual payment. I might consider a 1-off,
lifetime, fee if I needed the other functions.
Avast AV + Comodo FW seems to be OK.

in this case you can run a live linux session, make your payment, print the
receipt and close your pc

you don't need the AV and you don't waste money for it
