Default Sound devices not swapping

[Win XP SP3.]

I have an integrated sound card and speakers and a USB headset. Until
recently the integrated sound card would normally be active. When I
plugged in the headset the sound would automatically swap to the
headset. For some reason it no longer does this and I have to
manually change it in control panel. Can anyone help me return this
to working automatically? I am not aware of changing anything.

Never automatically switched for me when I plugged in my USB
headphones. I always had to manually switch. However, I just used
the inbuilt sound device support already included in Windows for the
USB headphone. I did not have to install any additional software.
Perhaps what does the automatic switch for you is software that came
with the USB headphones.

I didn't install any additional software for the headset (except the
drivers). However the 'problem' seems to have resolved itself, for
now anyway.
