Also, what do we do about the case and the 2TB
inability to connect fully? I could put the 2TB
inside the 8500 but then I loose my external HD
and I really don;t to hear the hard drive working
constantly.
I could buy another case for it but I find it
odd that it worked previously and it worked with
the Seagate 1TB HD so it should work?

Until I get some sort of connection with the 2TB
drive we really can't do anything with it. I do
have the Seagate 1TB drive I use for the 8200 and
the Patriot Key and a few others and also DVD's.

It could be the power adapter that is at fault.
Maybe the 1TB drive draws less current
during spinup than the 2TB one does.

You can find replacement adapters, but the
chances of getting Chinese rubbish is high.
The customer reviews will tell you whether the
product is trustworthy or not. The fake reviews
really stand out.

http://www.amazon.com/12-Volt-Power-...v+power+supply

The hard drive draws a fair amount of current during
the first few seconds, and drops back to 13W or less
when running. The hard drive enclosure power adapters
are strange, in that they tend to be rated for 2 amps,
and if the design was really set up for that, they would
"cut off" before the drive could finish spinup. The
adapters instead, appear to allow a higher current
flow, for a long enough period to finish spinup.
After which, the 2A rating is just enough to keep the
drive working. If you buy an adapter which is not
specifically for a disk enclosure, the amps may be the
absolute cutoff point, so picking a 5A adapter, is
to make sure if 3-4A are drawn during startup, the
overcurrent doesn't trip on it.

Picking these adapters is just as tough as picking
the damn enclosure in the first place. Not easy.

Buying another enclosure is certainly another way to
solve the problem, but it's also just another spin
of the roulette wheel when it comes to the quality
of the wall adapter.

Hi Paul,

I guess you missed my post where I said that
everything came back to normal including my
bookmarks on the 1TB.

I thought I did give you updates on the Malwarebtyes
scans which found a Pup virus which I deleted and
ran the scan again and said that it was OK afterwards.
I ran Avast, and SuperAntispware which found nothing
and checked for updates for Spyware Blaster.

I checked the Action Center and download 4 out
of 5 updates and ran the Troubleshooting program
because it was a Action Center alert item but did not
display the contents of the scan.

I did a System Restore after I did the Bookmark Restore
and the (4) Windows Updates.

At present yes, to your number 1, however the 2TB is
not in the 8500 and I would prefer not doing so. I
want it left as an external HD. If that means buying
another case I have no problem with that.

Do you see any here you like?

https://www.google.com/search?q=exte...IVD_tjCh1aiw1p

The thing is the 2TB did work previously in the case so
it still should. I can keep trying to connect it to see if it
will work.

Just to refresh, in Macrium, do I select Clone this disk?

Thanks,
Robert

In passing, do you recall me bringing up
the subject of my images being flipped in
Yahoo and Outlook?

I came up with a simple solution. I rotate
the pictures left with my Dell imagining and
save them that way so that when they are sent
via Outlook it flips them upright.

For just a few pictures via email its not that
big of a deal

For making a backup, you want *Image*.

Clone tries to take over the whole (output) disk. That was a
fine plan when the 2TB drive was new and had nothing
on it. Now, you want to be more selective where the
output is stored. So that you don't upset the other
good things on that 2TB drive.

When you Image the 1TB drive, the output format is a
single .mrimg file. You will be storing it on the E: partition
(the biggest partition on the 2TB drive).

Some day, if the C: partition on the 1TB has a problem,
you restore the image that is stored on your 2TB drive.
You can select the partition(s) you want from the .mrimg
at restore time.

*******

Still haven't spotted the perfect enclosure.
There's always something wrong with them. I
don't know how many of the enclosure designs
similar to your enclosure with 80mm fan, have
that plastic tab to hold the drive in place.

Were still faced getting the 2TB to connect
so that we can do all of this. Of course I
could put it inside the 8500 just for doing
a image backup and then take it back out but
I would still be back where I was.

Another reason for not putting it inside the
8500 is the noise issue.

Also, when I was trying to get the 2TB connection
working I could access the My Documents files
on the 2TB drive but it still was grayed out
when I went into My Computer.

While trying to test the 2TB the
safely remove went missing again.
I can't remember the program we
used to release it before.

Anyways, I thought you might like

I seem to remember you had me
go into Device Manager to change
a setting to restore the Safely
Remove but I can't remember exactly
how to do it.

The disk letters in question, are from
the 8500 card reader. E/F/G/H.

Disk Management shows the scroll bar on the right,
so three is one disk missing from the main view.
And that would be the 1TB drive.

Recovery partition - System = holds the /boot files for Win7
Active = boot flag is set on this partition
- This partition is the equivalent of
System Reserved on other peoples computers.
- This partition also holds a set of files
to reinstall Dell Windows 7

C: - Boot = holds the OS file set
Pagefile, Crash Dump = Stuff the OS needs

Looks like the backup will be around 160GB, and with
mild compression will be a bit smaller. And that should
fit easily on the 2TB backup folder. You could probably
do eight backups with room to spare.

*******

You were using a trial copy of "USB Safely Remove" I think.
Which displays the path of the thing blocking removal. That
was its main benefit.

If the notification icon is missing, you could review
the notification icon settings.

The command to make Safely Remove appear, is similar to this,
and you would do this from an elevated "Run As Administrator"
command prompt window.

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

The article I was reading, said this was an alternate
form of the command. So you could try this as it is
less typing.

control hotplug.dll

I haven't powered off the computer because the
2TB is still connected via USB and I don't want
to damage it by powering down.

The final solution was when you had me change the
setting to turn a drive on or off or something like
that and that's what reinstated the icon.

Robert

Of course! I completely forgot about it being Offline.

So it *is* responding, and looking in Disk Management
would have shown the problem.

I use Device Manager and Disk Management here a lot,
to verify stuff. Very handy for doing a quick
check to see if something is dead or not.

You mean, go to Disk Management, find
the 2TB drive in the USB enclosure, look to the
left hand square block for that line in the table,
click it and select "Online" ?

That's how you go from Offline to Online, via Disk Management.

Or are you asking how to do a backup ?

E:, F:, G:, H: are your card reader volumes,
which currently have no media in them.

Your 2TB hard drive used to be J:, but using
Disk Management, you can verify that.

Start : Run : diskmgmt.msc

If the USB enclosure is no longer visible
in the removal menu, then I presume it's
ejected already.

But looking in Disk Management or Device Manager,
should give some additional hints regarding
existence. If it isn't in either of those,
it's probably ejected. Ideally, when ejected,
the enclosure hard drive should spin down.

Since we can't access the drive at the moment
could you give me the link for USB Safely
Remove again so that I can at least remove
the drive and then we can deal with the icon.

Maybe use the Patriot Key to test it.

Thanks,
Robert
