SATA Sled: Inserted Drive Not Mounting
I know this feature was broken in XP, but thought it was fixed in 7.
I have a SATA sled that allows hot plugging/unplugging of drives. My expectation was that I should be able to remove a drive from it, plug in another drive, and see the new drive. Instead, Windows 7 acts as if it were hung and I have to reboot via the hard restart button. Has my sys got a problem, or is that just the way it's supposed to be? -- Pete Cresswell |

Open the motherboard manual and look up eSATA setup in the BIOS. AHCI might need to be enabled for the specific controller and port for it to be able to hot-swap SATA drives in the HD dock or "sled". SATA Sled: Inserted Drive Not Mounting
Per Ghostrider:
Open the motherboard manual and look up eSATA setup in the BIOS. AHCI might need to be enabled for the specific controller and port for it to be able to hot-swap SATA drives in the HD dock or "sled". That was it: there was a "Hot Plug" option for each port. Took awhile for it to dawn on me that there is about 15 seconds before Intel tells Windows that a drive has been removed or inserted. Excuse me if this has already been remedied. The only thing I can think is that you're using IDE mode, instead of AHCI. AHCI allows hot-swapping of SATA drives, while IDE does not. How is your BIOS setup for this? |

How is your BIOS setup for this? Turned out where was a BIOS setting which turned hot swapping on and off on a per-port basis - and defaulted to "Off". -- Pete Cresswell |
