OT Firefox
My favorite browser has been Maxthon for some time, but it recently
has been having problems with a few web sites that I needed to get to. So I decided to try Firefox again, which I haven't tried in a while. So far, I like what I see, but I have a few questions: 1. When I type a URL or click on a favorite, it opens the page in the current tab, overriding the page that was already open. If I remember to hold down the Ctrl key when I do that, it will open it in a new tab, but I would like opening it in a new tab to be automatic. Is there a way to make that happen, either within Firefox or using an addon? 2. I would like to see the row of open tabs on the top, not on a sidebar. Is there a way to change that? 3. There is a long list of addons. Any that are particularly recommended? |

I would like to see the row of open tabs on the top, not on a sidebar. Is there a way to change that? I believe if you have what is called tab groups open, if you hit cntrl shift E, that will close the tab group and return the tab to the top of the Firefox window where they should be. I use the addon "Clasic Theme Restore" https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...themerestorer/ This allows me to put the Tabs where they should be on the bottom of the header information and a couple of other things. I also use "Hide Tab Bar With One Tab " https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...rc=userprofile With this addon when you only have one tab open the tab disappears, but comes back when you open the second tab. Note: You can open a Tab by pressing the scroll wheel on the mouse. I was very happy when I learned this. 3. There is a long list of addons. Any that are particularly recommended? The recommended list is completely dependent on your habits and preferences. However these are some that I find very useful Clippings. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...ppings/?src=ss When I first downloaded this, I was using different signatures with different emails. ie one for business letters and resumes, and the other for private correspondence. However since you can add several paragraphs to one clipping. it use is limitless. I use it for parts of my address when filling in forms. I use it for different forms of my address. ie me, my wife and I, etc. For my email address, my wife email address, my telephone number, ................ To use a clipping you right click in an editable window select Clippings and then the clipping you want. Another nice thing about Clipping is it can be used in both Thunderbird and Firefox, with the same Clippings. So you only need to add your address once and it is available for use in Firefox and in Thunderbird. The only other addon I could not do without is Quicknote. Like Clippings the notes you create in Firefox are available in Thunderbird. These are free form notes, so what ever you want to keep track of can be added to the notes. Clippings and Quicknote can be used in Firefox and Thunderbird. They must be installed in each and then you must point one to the file location of the others. |

Options|Tabs has the following checked: Open new Windows in a new tab instead, Warn me when opening multiple tabs might slow down Firefox, Don't load tabs until selected, and When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately and View|Sidebar has nothing checked. |

This allows me to put the Tabs where they should be on the bottom of the header information and a couple of other things. How did you use it to do that? On its "Tabs" Screen, I've selected "Tabs on top (default)," but they didn't move; the sidebar stayed there. I also use "Hide Tab Bar With One Tab " https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...rc=userprofile With this addon when you only have one tab open the tab disappears, but comes back when you open the second tab. I'm not sure whether I would want to do that, but I don't want to try it until the other issues are fixed. Note: You can open a Tab by pressing the scroll wheel on the mouse. But recommendations can be helpful. However these are some that I find very useful Clippings. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...ppings/?src=ss When I first downloaded this, I was using different signatures with different emails. ie one for business letters and resumes, and the other for private correspondence. I never use a browser for e-mail. However since you can add several paragraphs to one clipping. it use is limitless. I use it for parts of my address when filling in forms. Another nice thing about Clipping is it can be used in both Thunderbird and Firefox, with the same Clippings. So you only need to add your address once and it is available for use in Firefox and in Thunderbird. I never use Thunderbird. But I use AutoHotkey, which does similar things to what you describe with Clippings. But unlike Clippings, it works in *all* programs, not just two. The only other addon I could not do without is Quicknote. Like Clippings the notes you create in Firefox are available in Thunderbird. These are free form notes, so what ever you want to keep track of can be added to the notes. Clippings and Quicknote can be used in Firefox and Thunderbird. As some one else said this is troubling, in that the only way that I know of to get any thing like a side bar is to adjust the size of the tab group window. Are you running pure Firefox downloaded from the Mozilla site, or a variant from some other provider. ie one that some one modified, for their own purpose. Some places provide Firefox with preinstalled addons, and toolbars. What is showing in the addon window. Tools, addons. I did a little investigating and found there is an addon that will move the Tabs from the top to a side bar. It is called "Tab Sidebar 2.5 +" Is this showing in the Addons found above? If so uninstall it. However it is not suppose to work in Version 36. |

With the side bar addon removed, go back and make sure the open in new windows is checked. Either you have another addon that is changing this behavior or you have the settings wrong. I have the tab settings checked to open in new window, As I am review a web page like a news site, I open all URLS that look interesting on the page in a new tab and then go back and review all of the tabs that I have opened. I use the center mouse wheel to open new tabs, but you can open new tabs by right clicking on the URL and selecting open in new Tab. |
