Default Free Windows 8.1 and 10

Those who bought Windows 8 had free 8.1 and now they will have Windows 10
free for a year. Does this mean Windows is becoming a system for all? Who
will want open source system if we can get the best available system on the
market? Only concern I have is what is going on. This way no one will have
complaints.

"Open source" and "best" are not mutually exclusive. For that matter, while
pretty much everyone uses Windows, that doesn't automatically make it the
"best" OS.

complaints.

Define "what is going on". And there will ALWAYS be complaints.

If you mean by saying that "they will have Windows 10 free for a year"
is that it can only be used for one year, that is incorrect.

Licensed users of Windows 7, 8, & 8.1 have one year from the release of
Windows 10 to get it for free. It can be used as long as the user
likes, use is not limited to one year.

Use and support is 'free for the life of the device' not as long as the
'user likes'

Modify the device enough (the device footprint is stored on MSFT
servers) and the device then becomes unsupported and no longer qualifies
for updates and patches.

It makes it the most popular, i.e. the best for most people.

This depends on how you define "best for most people". If you mean
using what most people use, OK. If you mean using what fits that
individual then no, Windows may not be the "best" in this case
regardless of popularity.

So you know better than the individual user what's best for them?
That's a very elitist position!

There's no implication that Springer knows best, only the obvious
observation that a one-size-fits-all OS such as Windows 10 is not the
best for everybody.

When he talks of 'using what fits that individual' that implies some
judgment he makes that is somehow superior to that of the said
individual. With me so far? Implying that he knows best.

BTW, "most used" is not equivalent to "most popular", as you infer. It
would be the case for Windows if people bought blank machines, and
selected the OS (or more than one) at time of purchase. But that's not
how it goes.

Nonsense. There's plenty of choice and the Windows one even has
substantial cost. It would not be the choice of so many if it didn't
meet their needs.

And "most popular" does not mean "best", and never has.

"most popular" means it's the best choice for many.

Sometimes the best is most popular, and sometimes it isn't.
Sometimes the most popular becomes a classic, sometimes it
doesn't. And so on. If these observations strike you as
"elitist", too bad.

We seem to have hit a nerve here Wolf. Perhaps you think being
elitist is somehow shameful?

+1 or ditto, whatever's in vogue these days. Well said.
