Default Anti-virus program?

Make sure you do a custom installation though, uncheck ALL Tools (you
don't need them) and if you want, you can uncheck Mail Shield as well.
File System and Web will suffice.

My bad. And, if you do use the Mail Shield, somewhere in it's
settings is an option to turn off that little "From Avast" advertisement
that it puts in outgoing mail.

Forgot something as well: watch out you don't install Google Chrome!

Yeah, you need to get rid of that...

FWIW: there *is* an option to do that and I have long since forgotten
how I did it. Took me awhile to find it, but if you were to Google the
right words you could probably zero in on it quickly.

I know about the option. It's somewhere in Mail Shield, but since I have
uninstalled it some time ago I also can't recall the exact settings.
(And I admit; I was too lazy to look it up :-).

Hi. I'm looking for a new FREE antivirus program. I've been using AVG. I
recently installed it on a new machine and all was going well until I tried
installing a program called aTube Catcher, which lets you download and save
YouTube videos. I have aTube Catcher on one machine and it works fine. I try
installing it on a new machine and AVG keeps finding a file and stopping me from
installing the program. I looked it up online and there are quite a few
complaints, all pointing at AVG. I've also noticed on the new machine, AVG is
finding fault with downloads of other programs I have been using on the old
machine. AVG just seems to have gotten very choosy lately, so I'm wondering if
there's another goor freebie out there. Thanks.

You say free so why not uninstall AVG and re-activate Windows Defender?
It is already on your windows 8/8.1 machine and all it needs is to
re-activate it and then download all the updates since it was last
updated. In most cases you will need to go to Windows update and select
all Windows Defender updates and download them.

IMHO, it is time to get a paid subscription to either McAfee and/or
Symantec Endpoint protection. I have used McAfee before and now I am
using Symantec Endpoint because I get both free of charge because I buy
corporate license and so Home use becomes free for employees.

Good luck.

I vouch for Mcafee. I get it free with my ISP and frankly, I feel very
secure with it installed. Windows Defender isn't good enough to be
anything but very basic protection.

Mcafee? I don't use any products that come as PUP's. Mcafee is close
to being malware. Anything but Mcafee!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with McAfee OR Norton. People that
continue to say that haven't used either program in the past 2 years or
so.

WD is a baseline POS.

Same as Norton and McAfee.

Ummm, no.

Are you really that naive to believe all the crap coming from those av
test sites when some of them are being paid to do the testing. Wake up
and smell the roses. :-(

That is an independent organization...not PC Magazine.

And, I happen to USE Norton on one computer and McAfee on another one.
So I know they both work very well.

They both leave a TON of folders and registry entries if you uninstall
them.

Revo uninstaller. Which I use to uninstall ALL programs.

Okay.

Doesn't McAfee have a cleanup tool on their website for that?

If I were making a list of recommended AV programs, Symantec/Norton and
McAfee would be at the bottom of that list.
