Closing programs in WIndows 8.1
I have been using W 8.1 for a couple of months now. Most of the
programs that I am using run on the desk top, but I have several games that work on the new interfaces. Some close when I switch back to the desktop but some do not. Frequently when I shut down the computer it will halt and say there is a program running. First how do I know which user programs are running in W 8.1. Is there any way to bring up a list of user programs? If I leave a W 8.1 program how do I close it. Everything I have tried to bring up a menu for the program has not worked. Esc, right click in the program etc. Some of the W 8.1 programs I have not even found a menu to change setting, print, etc |

Or, use control-alt-delete to start Task Manager. From the Performance view, click the Resource Monitor link near the bottom. Or, run "resmon.exe" from start. That should give you more info on current programs and resources. ******* In a tile program, try Alt-F4 to kill it. (More shortcuts of that sort, here.) http://www.computerworld.com/s/artic...t?pageNumber=5 Back in the desktop, slide your mouse along the left-hand edge of the screen. A thumbnail column should appear, with things like Tile programs displayed in it. Try right-clicking the thumbnail of the tile, and see of there is a close option there. You can see the thumbnails on the left in this picture. http://www.windows8web.com/wordpress...h-list-bar.gif You can kill processes from Task Manager, but that method is not as polite as the other methods. Hi, Keith. Remember that this Metro/Modern interface was designed with a touchscreen in mind... I have heard this since I started running Windows 8 back in early 2012. I even have been buying lots of Windows tablets since then too. And oddly enough, even on my Windows 8 tablets, I generally prefer pen enabled instead of touch. And on some machines I can choose pen, touch, or both active at the same time. And I generally run them in pen only mode. Touch does have some pretty nifty things like scrolling, zoom, and sliding items around. Yes I like this. But another thing that touch adds that I don't like is anything acts as a touch. Your palm on the screen, your other hand holding the tablet, etc. So I don't view touch as being so hot of an interface myself. And even if I have touch enabled on my tablets and then dock them (enabling my keyboard and mouse)... I still don't have a craving to reach for the screen to do something (even on the Metro interface). As the keyboard and mouse works alone very well indeed. If those who rather use touch and don't have a touch screen machine, might be interested in something like the Logitech K400r. As it has special Windows 8 hotkeys and the touchpad supports touch feature controls without a touch screen. I actually like this better than a real touch screen anyway. As you have the best of both worlds. ;-) -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Thunderbird v12.0.1 Centrino Core2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz - 4GB - Windows XP SP2 |

Is there anyway to close a program that show up as open when you are shutting down the computer. |

In the metro interface, move your cursor to the left top and thumbnail(s) will pop out. Right click and you'll get an option to close. If the program is not minimized, you can move the cursor up til the app shrinks, then move it to the bottom. Stupid way, ALT + F4 is better. AAMOF, the entire metro interface is stupid beyond belief. -- dadiOH ____________________________ Winters getting colder? Tired of the rat race? Taxes out of hand? Maybe just ready for a change? From Androids, WebOS, Palm (running TealOS), etc. So MS is only adapting the way the rest of the world does it. It isn't really any different than any other touch interface OS. I think one of my favorites is called TealOS. Although to close an app, here you can drag it either to the top or to the bottom to close it. Android to close an app, you need to drag either left and right. Yes I know, everybody is slightly different, but all the same idea. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Thunderbird v12.0.1 Centrino Core2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz - 4GB - Windows XP SP2 |

Start8 provides a proper desktop, but more importantly, it runs "apps" in Windows, just like real programs. Hah! Does it, or does doing that require another Stardock program, ModernMix, at http://www.stardock.com/products/modernmix/ ? I have them both installed here, so I'm not sure which does it, but I think it's ModernMix. -- Ken Blake |
