Default Unable to change Desktop Background

I recently inquired about changing my desktop background. I had tried the control panel as well as the desktop properties route, but the menu, which contains the background options, is disabled. I received advice, which was to click START, go to RUN and type in REGEDIT, and there were other directives along with that. My problem now, however, is that I cannot keep the REGEDIT dialogue box open for more that 5 - 10 seconds, and it just closes itself. I can not procede with the rest of the advice given to me because of this. Why would the dialogue box just close itself like that, how do I keep it open so fix my problem?

Why does Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening?

Get rid of the malware first, then worry about desktop properties.

is that I cannot keep the REGEDIT dialogue box open for more that 5 -
10 seconds, and it just closes itself.

This is a sign that you have malware.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.
