Pale Moon browser Crashes repeatedly
Are you sure you're not running it from inside the ZIP?
The XP+ "convenience" of showing ZIPs as folders can cause problems like that because the ZIP is not actually unpacked. Aside from that, why not just download the installer? I use Pale Moon and have never had problems. It actually is FF underneath. It just leaves out some of the extras that many people don't need, like parental controls, in order to keep it lean. But unlike other versions of Mozilla browsers, like K-Meleon, the people making Pale Moon don't change anything. wrote in message ... |I cant recall who suggested the browser "Pale Moon" to me on this group, | without reading many older posts, but I decided to give it a try. It just crashes instantly. I tried several times as I mentioned. I chose the ZIP version since I'm on dialup and the smaller the better for a download. I'll probably DL the direct installer the next time I get to a WIFI spot. But if I recall, it wanted to install it to my computer, and I was downloading on my Win98 computer. I dont allow ANY sites to directly install stuff to my computer, except for Microsoft. (I could be mistaken about that). I have noticed that FF version 22, tends to be somewhat slow on XP, whereas Seamonkey runs well. But then again, FF3.x runs slower on my Win98 machine too, whereas K-meleon always ran fast. I think FF has too much crap in it, and it seems to be getting worse. And this computer is older and not the fastest either. If I ever get XP to properly connect to the internet correctly, via dialup, I intend to downgrade FF to version 5.x. That's the version I have on my XP laptop, and it works fine. Of course I'm sure that sooner or later some websites will be nagging about upgrading. Youtube constantly nags me about upgrading FF 3.x on my W98 machine. But there is no upgrade possible on W98. So YOU dont need the parental controls...... Are you sure about that ? wrote in message .. . |I cant recall who suggested the browser "Pale Moon" to me on this group, | without reading many older posts, but I decided to give it a try. It would be interesting to see if that works for you. (I think it's generally better to use the installer file). BTW, I was the one who mentioned PM, and it works well for me (although occasionally a fussy site might work better with FF) If you dont mind, can you post the URL, so I know I'm getting the same one. I would not think there would be any difference between the zip and the installer. Normally the zip is the same, just compressed. But whatever is in that zip file did not attempt to install. Just went CRASH! Even more bizarre, the ZIP file was 26.621M.I had deleted it, but it was still on my W98 machine. Like I said, I did get it from their own site. I can DL a 16m in an hour. so I'll just do it while I'm fixing my plumbing. I had a pipe freeze and burst. What a damn mess !!!! |

You should drop over to the KM forums, they never really stopped working on it, a few of the devoted guys continued to develop and release versions of it, in fact, I continue to use two of the releases (1.6.17db+v8 and K-Meleon Twin+)now. The guys have been very busy and steadily working on a new K-Meleon 74 that is currently up to beta 3 and is now being carried at Major Geeks for download and of course you can always grab a copy from SourceForce. -- Zo "This is the model home for your future. If the zip is corrupted, it must have been zipped up as corrupted. Otherwise it would not open.... |

I've found that all of the Firefox versions in recent memory take a long time to load. PM is a bit better, at least for me, but I agree with you -- they just keep getting worse. Of all the browsers I have ever used, K-meleon was my favorite. I'm liking Seamonkey more now, the older vers for 98 kind of sucked, but they have improved it a lot. Even FF 3.x was literally taking as much as 2 minutes to load after I clicked on it. (on W98). I finally removed all the extensions, except for two I absolutely needed. But it still takes close to a full minute. K-meleon loads almost instantly. I had installed FF4, 5, and 8, using that Kernel-EX, which is supposed to make FF allowed to be used in W98. It would load, but would crash regularly. Thats why I went back to ver 3.x. K-meleon still works on my W98 puter, but I almost have to run it with java script disabled, or it constantly gets script errors. Many if not most sites require scripts these days. I tend to question what all those damn scripts are for, and why the older one did not give errors. Then again, I find most websites far too bloated these days. The old ones did the same thing, but with a lot less trouble. Sites that open with a flash video home page, I dont even go to. They just are not made for dialup. Its too bad that K-meleon was not continued. For the brief moments I have been able to get a usable dialup connection on the XP puter, I have had FF 22.x get a script error, and of all places, on the MS website. Whatever FF is doing, it's not working very well. I plan to downgrade the version, but for now, Seamonkey has become my default browser for now. IE8 is not too bad, compared to the old ver 6, but I still dont care for it, and it lacks the FF extension "Download Helper", which I absolutely need to watch youtube videos. I MUST DL them first, (being on dialup). Then there's Chrome, never tried it, and since i hear Google can track users with it, I will avoid it. That's about all there is, except Opera, and I never could stand that thing. That pretty muich covers all the browser options. | So YOU dont need the parental controls...... | Are you sure about that ? | No one touches my box but me. ...But you got to protect yourself from yourself ....LOL... |

Really, I didn't know that. Thanks !!! I have ver 1.54 on W98 (thats the last one made for 98). There was one newer one, but not for 98. I think it was 1.56 or something like that. |

It installed fien, but as soon as I clicked on palemoon.exe, it crashed again. It just will not run. But I think I found out why. My computer is just too old. It's a PIII. They have a list of processors on their site and it says that it wont work on my processor. For a prgm that says it's a trimmed down variety of FF, I cant understand why it requires so much power to operate. I have not gone beyond FF 22, but that installs and runs fine. Either way, I just cant run it!. But I'm happy with Seamonkey anyhow, and will look into the newer K-meleon. BTW: The latest installer is 20.7M. (yet the .zip was 26+m) Weird! Here is a quote: ---- What is Pale Moon Pale Moon is a web browser based on the security and robustness of the Firefox browser, started and maintained by a single person (Mr. M.C. Straver). It eliminates several unnecessary features that slow down the browser and it is optimized for modern hardware. A few examples: Accessibility features, Parental controls, Maintenance service and others. You won't find these features (that most people don't even know exist) in this web browser. Although there are older versions that can run on old computers (such as Pentium III), this browser has been optimized to work well with PCs that are no more than several years old (approximately up to 10 years old). If you have an old computer and you don't know if it's going to work with the latest version of Pale Moon there are two ways to test this. You can download the latest version and see if the browser will start (if it doesn't, visit the technical section of the home page and check the "Supported processors" section), or you can check before downloading if your processor meets the browser’s requirements with a small tool (it needs support for SSE2). If it doesn't start, your computer is likely too old to run Pale Moon. |
