XP Home based on Win ME but XP Pro based on NT ?
Hi,
I've been told that XP Home is based on Windows ME (and as such is not very good), whereas XP Pro is based on Windows NT and is much better in terms of stability etc. However, I was under the impression that XP Home was just a cut down version of XP Pro with less features. I also assumed that it was a bit of an attempt by Microsoft to position each prodcut in the market. Anybody got any comments on this? |

XP Home based on Win ME but XP Pro based on NT ?
From a user's perspective, both versions of XP are simply the newest
siblings in the Windows NT family of operating systems: Win NT Win 2000 Win XP. Negative stuff that you here about XP Home Edition is not inherited from Win ME. What you have probably heard is nothing more than grousing about the learning curve that confronts home users who jump from the W95/98/ME family into the WinNT/2000/XP family. --Jim "Paul Williams" wrote in message om... Other replies prior to this one are correct and you will often notice when you go to download XP driver upgrades for 3rd. party programs, you will see the option is 2000/XP. FWIW, I originally ran '98 (1st. release), upgraded it to ME (full version), then later to XP Pro (also full version) and have never had any problems. -- johnf (when replying direct, please ensure my address ends with .au) |

XP Home based on Win ME but XP Pro based on NT ?
The most unfriendly operating system for the novice user.
You have to be a professional user, to run both home and pro. Yes, both home and pro belong to the NT family. Something MS never wanted to do, but they can't make money from support if they make it easy, so they decided to nail those customers that made them to be the richest company in the world. Gates have enough money to last his family hundred of years, but he is trying to buy heaven now, so he can nail his customers after he dies. MS now doesn't care whether you are a happy customer or not, and they don't care if you never bought from them ever again, because they can make money by nailing others, wasting their time and money, try to impress them with their worthless over engineered programs. Yes, it is more stable, but sometimes it dogs it, and can't be restored. You simply have to install clean when it does, it doesn't even reinstall on top the old install, because the stupid thing asks for Administrator password but it can't recognize it. To find your mail files, you have to dig for them 10 folders deep, in a weird very long directory name. Scew your mail box he says, you don't need to find it. If you don't know how to secure and configure XP, then every body on the internet can access your computer, play with your files and do as they please. What also worse, for the littlest problem, the computer shuts down. Who is the stupid person that thought shutting the computer down in the middle of your work is a great idea. Works perfect with MS Office, that thing never ran right from day one, getting errors with office is a very common thing, if you don't save your work, then you are going to loose your work when the computer shuts down. MS never made a good running product, they always do something new, with more bugs, tougher bugs, and harder to use. Look back in their history, from DOS days until today, non of the products they made was at least reasonable. I use to help people run their computer, I don't do it no more, XP has so many bugs is unbelievable, they make you a service pack, and the darn thing fixes some bugs but adds big new bugs. So you would call MS and pay for support. Not as cheap as Win95, because this is serious NT support. Their support are a bunch of ignorant idiots. In the past they had mediocre support, now they have stupid ignorant agencies doing their support. "Paul Williams" wrote in message om... XP Home based on Win ME but XP Pro based on NT ?
Hi Paul,
Both are based on the NT kernel. The Win9x kernel ended with WinME, it = is the last of the line. Both versions have the same stability features. = Your impression is correct. BGB, May I suggest you abandon your normal male penchant for not reading the manual and actually learn what you are talking about. If you find using XP unfriendly, you have some serious learning disorders. Every example you gave was a smoking gun pointing out how ill informed you are. Maybe it is just the accelerated pace of technology that has you confused. Do you also find programming your DVD or VCR player a challenge? Maybe that remote with the ability to control more than one device is the same frustration. I see your frequent posts, and usually just shake my head in amusement. But I am beginning to feel sorry for you, either you are a pre-teen with serious lack of parental supervision, or an ill informed adult. In either case your posts are getting painful to ignore. Where in the computer owners manual does it say this computer was expressly built for stupid ill informed people that refuse to learn how to use them? BTW From your recent posts, you are probably doing people a favor not offering your help. -- Michael Stevens MS-MVP XP http://michaelstevenstech.com |

It must be very disconcerting for relative newbies who have just purchased XP, coming to the NG seeking a solution to a, probably minor, problem & reading something like that. It sure would give me second thoughts as to whether I'd done the right thing. And AFAIK, Dell & Gateway (also HP) modify the basic XP program towards their own means - look what happened to HP OS's when SP1 was first released. To me, that can't be hung on MS. -- johnf |

I read this post and figured it was an attempt at sarcastic humor. Then I
read the responses and discovered "Bil" was serious. A heavy sigh is the most emotion I can generate for this poor fellow. To anyone reading "Bil's" misguided rant who is new to XP or thinking of getting it just ignore the post. For anyone who has to drive in "Bil's" neighborhood we will say a prayer for you and hope he spent more time learning the rules of the road than he did learning to work Windows. Michael,
If what you say about OEMs is true, explain why new PC systems prominently display the Windows logo and bear the legend "Designed For Microsoft Windows XP." I have never seen a washing machine stamped with the Proctor & Gamble logo or a table lamp "Designed For Westinghouse Light Bulbs." Sorry, Mike, but the tail is wagging the dog in the PC industry. Unfortunately, your posts suggest that you are one of the wagged dogs. -Jim "Michael Stevens" wrote in message ... JimC wrote: "johnf" wrote in message ...
