Is there a Windows trick to get Google Books chapters saved?
If a fat reference book is out of print, and you want just one chapter,
with diagrams (not just the text), how can we improve upon this process given a Windows computer? 1. Search terms get you a books.google.com URL to the desired book. 2. You set up the book view to scroll page by page in full pages. 3. Bring up Irfanview: Options Capture/Screenshot 4. Irfanview: Capture area 5) Custom rectangle/region capture 5. Click the top left & note the numbers in Irfanview (e.g., 640x228). 6. Click the bottom right & note the numbers in Irfanview (e.g., 575x853). 7. Go back to Irfanview: Options Capture/Screenshot 8. Irfanview: Capture area 7) Fixed screen rectangle X-pos: 640 Y-pos: 228 Width: 575 Height: 853 9. Scroll to the desired chapter page & press F11 (to capture the area). 10. Press the next-page button & press F11 (repeat as needed). This procedure works so I just want to ask technical improvement questions. a. Is there a better method to capture the area of the screen? b. Is there a way to get *more* of the Google Book that the first time? Is there a better Windows trick to get Google Books chapters saved? |

The book in question might be available on eMule or PirateBay, or Demonoid. There are many engineering handbooks available (especially on Demonoid). Many novels too. My LIBRARY HDD is up to 750GB with books of varying sorts. Note that not all book pages are shown on Google Books. The method you describe is tedious; but if necessary save to pdf and then OCR the pages |

It depends a lot on the book(s) you want. Some are still in copyright, and as Peter said, only "preview" pages are available. For one's that are out of copyright, they maybe be available as a PDF file or an ebook. If you don't mind listing a couple of the books, I'll go take a look and see what I learn. -- Ken Mac OS X 10.11.6 Firefox 51.0.1 (64 bit) Thunderbird 45.7.1 "My brain is like lightning, a quick flash and it's gone!" |

suggested: Note that not all book pages are shown on Google Books. What is a good method to get around that? I suspect, but have not tested, that one or more of these gets other pages? a. Change the IP address b. Search at a later date c. Change the search terms While I'm sure the system is well designed to make it highly improbable you'd ever get the entire book, if only a chapter is needed, these approaches might work, I would think. Is there anything else that can be done to get more pages if a specific set of pages in a chapter are missing? The method you describe is tedious; but if necessary save to pdf and then OCR the pages That's a good idea since it's easy to save from Irfanview to PDF. Does anyone suggest a good freeware OCR program for Windows 10? |

But without having a book title, nothing I can tell you. -- Ken Mac OS X 10.11.6 Firefox 51.0.1 (64 bit) Thunderbird 45.7.1 "My brain is like lightning, a quick flash and it's gone!" |

a. Is there a better method to capture the area of the screen? Yes. Read it and memorize it. Simple.
