XP Firewall does not stop pop up spam

Because the firewall built into XP stops Windows messenger popups just fine as does all the other software firewalls out there, therefore if they are still getting popups then its not that particular kind of popup therefore the firewall isn't relevant. So here you say it works... The problem is likely to either be popups that pop-up when you visit websites that think such kinds of things are acceptable, or they are likely to be a result of spyware installed on the computer. and here you admit it doesn't. Zone Alarm stops all spyware. XP's firewall is simply a poor attempt at creating something that typical consumers would use. |

DJ,
What are you talking about..? Yes - the XP ICF does block the NET SEND POP-UPS, as stated. But does NOT stop Web Page Pop-ups. Zone alarm CAN - if you know what you are doing, keep particular outgoing traffic from outgoing - and yes - XP ICF does not block outgoing traffic at all. So technically, Zone Alarm can not only stop the NET SEND POP-UPS and keep the spyware you installed from sending out data you don't want - but it does not block Web Page Pop-Up or Pop-Unders to my knowledge. XP Firewall does not stop pop up spam
This is the last from me on this matter. (Matt = xX-spitfire-Xx) (different
PC's, lazy setup) I used the IPv6 problem as an example. What it is (IPv6), is not relevant. What I thought was relevant was the fact that it will pass through the XP firewall. It was an example. I'm very sorry I mentioned it! PS. Zone Alarm Pro has an "Ad Blocking" feature on its privacy page, with the caption "Blocks All pop-ups/pop-under and animated ads". I personally find it 99% effective in stopping all web-page pop-ups. Coupled with its regular program updates, I highly reccomend this for someone with XP Home ed. who wants a more effective firewall. I don't think anyone is suggesting that this is a complete sollution. It is, however, a zillion times better then the built in, and IMO more then good enough for most people. I was a little annoyed that someone would jump down my throat and not offer any advice to the contrary, but we all have our cranky days. Peace All. "DJ" wrote in message ... Firstly the type of firewall at use here isn't an issue, and secondly, do you even _know_ what ipv6 is? Actually his advice is right on. MS version of a firewall is a complete joke. Do you even understand that IPv6 (note the correct capitalization please) has nothing to do with XP and its "firewall". |

All software firewalls are imperfect. Microsoft's one is less perfect than others however, it is perfectly adequate at blocking Windows Messenger netbios popups. Do you even understand that IPv6 (note the correct capitalization please) has nothing to do with XP and its "firewall". I understand perfectly. Read the thread again: It wasn't me who used it as an example. In fact the un-suitability of that as an example is precisely my point. -- -- Rob Moir Microsoft MVP for Windows / Security www.robertmoir.co.uk |
